I thought all carbs are not created equal and that one should stay away from the white carbs and just go far the whole wheat, whole grain, brown rice instead of white rice, etc.

And everything in moderation of course. Portion size is very important and we do not realize how much we're eating until we measure out our portion sizes for a while - then we can get a sense of what a "portion" looks like. It's not as much as one thinks most of the time, and unknowingly to us, maybe contributes to many of our weight problems.

Someone pointed this out to me a while back and was very enlightening to say the least.

Yes, if you think of your body as a processing plant and make it do all of the work instead of the food manufacturers you will make better food choices. I don't know about "white" being the culprit all of the time but whole foods, grains, etc. for everyday use is a better choice. We tend to think that everyday, every meal needs a dessert or sweetened beverage. If we used dessert as a special treat once in a while and stayed away from high calorie sweetened drinks we would all be thinner. Obesity and type II diabetes would be in much lower existence in our society. Of course, that ugly thing called exercise or activity also plays an important role.
Does quilting qualify? Too bad it doesn't burn more calories. The best thing about quilting for me is that I get carried away for hours and forget to have a meal!
