I have been asked to make a quilt for an 8 year old girl who loves horses. I don't want to make the quilt too young so no rocking pink horses but I am worried that some of the horse prints I have found (real horses with beautiful backgrounds) might be a little masculine. I would appreciate any ideas on how to use the horse print but still have it be age appropriate. thanks ( I do not have the fabric yet but hopefully will be getting tomorrow)

I just ordered some very pretty fabric from fabric.com and it was inexpensive and even nicer than the pictures looked.

There are some fabrics out there with the ribbons that you win at horse shows. Makower did one as part of its Gymkhana line, and there is some currently available on eBay. The whole line is wonderful for little girls, but very hard to find.

Also, Springs Industries has the Shenandoah line of horse prints that is very pretty and definitely a little more on the feminine side. Jo-Anns has a version of this collection available at present if you can't find it elsewhere.

Other options that might be fun for a young girl are the Laurel Burch collections of horse fabrics, and there are some patterns available for those.

The Laurel Burch horses are magical. My niece loved the quilt I made her.

Here is a horse quilt picture I took at a quilt show because I loved how it looks. My DGD is also horse crazy and although I have made her a lap-sized horse quilt, she's asking for more! I bought this pattern from Southwest Decoratives and plan to make it for her. It's all pieced. They have another one of just horse heads, too.
