More annoying Mug Rugs!

Here are my Mug Rugs. I wrapped these on a recent trip to NC
and then put them together when I got home. Everyone in my family will get one (or several) this year.

Oh no, mug rugs are never annoying. Now my handknit dishcloths...maybe. (I'm up to eight).

How do you make the material you use to wrap them. My husband says when he was a boy his granny used to make rugs like this. I would like to show him how to do it again if you care to share.
