Okay here is a question for all of you who are in business. My mom and I are wanting to open an at home business. the first step is a product which we have and a niche. which we have and we even have a name and slogan picked out. now all we have to do is get it registered. I am going to have her pick a couple more but we don't know how or where to go to do it or how much it would cost. that is where you guys come in. can you tell me how to do it? or at least where to go?
My mom paints and she is going to be painting murals for weddings and parties and such. she is really really good and that is not just a daughter talking. she had a couple use two murals, that she painted for my bros wedding, last weekend for their wedding.

awesome. Just went there and it is really confusing, I never knew that you would have to have a designation in your name. anyone know what would be a good one for a home based business?

You might check the Small Business Administration:

http://www.sba.gov/

I know we had to get a federal tax ID number and file a fictitious business name statement though our county. It's actually not that hard to do. Now, if you need to copyright any of your mom's designs, that's another issue, and again you might find info at the website above.

Best of luck to you!

And don't forget to consult with your insurance agent about what your homeowner's insurance will and will not cover, expecially liability if you will have customers visitng your house.

Also check to make sure that it isn't illegal to run a business out of your home. Zoning depts can help you with that :D:D:D
I wish you both the best of luck in your new endeavor :D:D:D

not understanding, where does she paint the mural? Like if I was having a wedding in a banquet hall does she paint it right on the wall of the banquet hall? Or is it on a removable paper or canvas.

One thing to check on is tax liability. My friend started a glass art business and she teaches metal clay classes. She had so much time that she was allowed to make a profit. I would say an accountant or tax attorney would be something to look into.

go to your county clerks office- they will have an application- and fees- (they vary state to state-county to county- city to city)
first they will (do a search) on the name you want to use to make sure someone else does not already have it-
if no one does they will allow you to have it-
it will be published as an assumed name-
then you have to file for a tax id---another process- the clerk should be able to tell you how- may have those forms too- if not should tell you how to get them.
