There are lots of new sewing and quilting classes at Rich Mountain Community College this Fall. Learn the basics in the new Introduction to Sewing workshop and the following week you can make a Twister Quilt top in another one day session. Weekly classes offer Tote Bag Construction, or you can make a sampler quilt top in the Triangles Without Tears class. In addition, you can learn to Machine Quilt on your home sewing machine, or join the UFO class to finish some of those projects that may have lost momentum. (Sorry, no space aliens.) Class sizes are limited, so for more information on how to sign up, call Maureen Keese , Director of Lifelong Learning, at the college: 479-394-7622 ext. 1311

Tote Bag Construction Class starts Wed August 17, 2011 6 to 9 PM: one day, 4 weeks, 3 hours, $20; Level: beginner

In this fun, four week class, students will learn to make several types of fabric bags or containers from their own fabrics. Sizes can be custom made or you can follow a planned pattern. Students will make a drawstring bag, a sewing machine cover, and a handy tote. Supplies include the following: Sewing machine, 90/14 needles, thread, rotary mat, ruler and cutter, scissors. Fabrics should be 100% cotton, and can be yardage or a selection of 8 to 12 fat quarters. Optional supplies include bodkin, 1 yard ribbon or cording, 2 yards of one inch wide nylon, cotton or poly webbing, fusible interfacing, fusible fleece, or thin batting like Warm and Natural or 80/20 cotton/poly low loft. Class size is limited, so stop by the college today to sign up. Quilting UFOs and PIGS Class starts Wed September 14 6 to 9 PM: one day, 4 weeks, 3 hours, $20: all skill levels

All quilters have them: UnFinished Objects and Projects in Grocery Sacks. Let's clear out some space in your closet and finish these projects. Whether you just have to add some binding or need to finish cutting it out to get started, this is a great class to get you motivated. It’s okay to bring those, “What was I thinking??!” projects, too. Perhaps we can re-purpose what you’ve started. No matter what, you will have a good time with a bunch of like minded enablers. And it's a lot cheaper than therapy! Space is limited; stop by and sign up soon.
If you have not quilted before, come and make a simple patchwork project to get you started.
Bring the usual supplies: sewing machine, needles, thread, fabric, scissors, rotary mat & cutter. Batting and hand needles will be needed to finish your project. Class meets four Wednesdays from 6PM to 9PM. Cost $20. Seating is limited, so reserve your space now. For more information, contact Maureen Keese at RMCC. 479-394-7622 ext. 1311 [email protected]

Introduction to Sewing One Day Workshop Sat Sept 17, 9 AM to 5 PM, $20; level: beginner

This workshop you will learn to use your sewing machine, how to read a pattern, how to use quilting tools, and so on. You may bring any sewing machine that you can transport to the class, whether vintage or new. If you have your manual, bring it. If you need help in locating a manual for your machine, contact the instructor a week or two before the class to allow time to find your information. Whether you want to sew to make clothes or quilts, this is the perfect way to get started. You will need your machine and its accessories, 90/14 machine needles, all purpose thread, scissors, hand needles, thimble, about a yard or two of cotton fabric, pins, mechanical pencil, (optional: pattern, zipper (not invisible zipper) dressmaker's carbon and tracing wheel, dressmaker's chalk, air or water soluble pens, rotary mat, ruler & cutter). Space is limited, so sign up soon. For more information on this and other quilting and sewing classes offered, contact Maureen Keese at Rich Mountain Community College. 479-394-7622 ext. 1311 [email protected]

Make a little Twister quilt top in a day! One day workshop from 9AM to 5PM Saturday September 24, 2011 Level: beginner

Stephanie Povey will teach this fun and popular quilt class. You will learn to make a template, and put together a small quilt top, suitable as a table topper or wall hanging. With the technique you will learn in class, you can easily make a larger sized quilt later. Supplies needed are: sewing machine, needles, thread, pins, about 50 five inch fabric squares of assorted light and dark colors (you will have some left over), 4 three inch strips cut the width of fabric for your border, marking pencils (mechanical pencils and inexpensive color pencils will do), a fine tip Sharpie marker, fabric scissors, craft scissors, template plastic (can be purchased in class…or…hint: a translucent cover that comes on frozen non-dairy topping works great!), and a 6” square ruler, rotary mat & cutter. It is suggested that you starch your fabric before coming to class. That will make it easier to handle later. Bring a lunch and be prepared to have a great time with your friends. This project is suitable for beginners. Spaces are limited, so sign up now. Cost for the class is $20. For registration information, contact Maureen Keese at the college: email [email protected] or call 479-394-7622 ext 1311.

Just Machine Quilting 1: one day, 4 weeks, 3 hours, $20; level: beginner

This entry level, hands-on class focuses on the quilting process rather than patchwork. A domestic home sewing machine that sews a good straight stitch is all that is needed; long arms and computerized machines are not necessary. You will learn how to use all the presser feet used in machine quilting for both straight stitching as well as free motion work. Supplies include sewing machine, thread, hand and machine needles, scissors, about 3 yards cotton fabric and low loft batting. Classes begin Mon Sep 19, 6 to 9 PM, and will run for 4 weeks. Cost of this class is only $20. This is a great opportunity for those wishing to learn machine quilting and wondering how to start. Space is limited, so stop by RMCC and sign up today. For more information, call Maureen Keese at the college: 479-394-7622 ext 1311.

Machine Patchwork: Triangles Without Tears Sampler Quilt: Starts Wed Oct 12, 6 to 9 PM one day, 8 weeks, 3 hours, $40; level: beginner

In this entry level class, students will explore several painless techniques of making blocks that use triangles, and put them all together in a wonderful sampler. You will learn easy machine piecing techniques that can be fulfilled by using fat quarters, or yardage. (A fat quarter is a piece of fabric that is about 18” x 22.”) Minimum fabric requirements are one half yard each of 3 light, 3 medium, and 3 dark fabrics, and 2.5 yards for borders, plus scraps for pieced borders. For first class, bring sewing machine, thread, needles, straight stitch foot, scissors, rotary cutter, ruler and mat, and at least 4 fat quarters of varying values. Additional supplies include graph paper, pencil, and colored pencils. Space is limited, so stop by RMCC and sign up today. For more information, call Maureen Keese at the college: 479-394-7622 ext 1311.
