Default Adding borders to my Hexie quilt

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I have made a Hexie quilt with a white base fabric but want to add coloured borders. I just can't work out how to join the two pieces. Do I make hexies in the same colour as the border fabric or do I appliqué the hexies onto the borders. The reason for adding borders is that I want to practice some fmq. Any help would be appreciated - there is always someone with wisdom to share. Thanks in advance.

I appliqued my first quilt onto the borders and had issues at the corners.....

In the second, I left the outside of the pieces (elongated hexies) "open" -- that is I didn't fold them over (or I unfolded them) so I would have a straight line to be able to sew the seam via the machine. I tended to like the 2nd better because I got much straighter/flatter seams. I haven't FMQ'd it yet, but it is next in the queue.

Thanks luvspaper, I was tempted to try that but wanted confirmation.

I just pinned it carefully and appliqued the hexes onto the border. Just have to be super accurate.

I would applique them onto the border so that you can keep the hexie shape. I use those washable glue sticks to hold everything together, works great! Good Luck!

The second way doesn't have a complete hexie on the outside of every other one.... so it does depend on whether you want a full hexie on the outside.
