I have tried to change my avatar twice ... to a fall picture from a hydrangea..... The first time I thought my picture was too big and that is why it didn't work, so I resized my pix.... it still does not show up right on the threads.... It does show the right picture on my setting page... very strange... any suggestions??

An avatar and a profile picture are two different things. You change them both on your settings page, but on separate links. They don't interchange.
Note: The maximum size of your avatar custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 64.0 KB (whichever is smaller).
