Default Why is my fabric shifting?

So I'm making a large hot pad ... using top, Wrap & Zap batting, insul-fleece, another W & Z batting layer, then backing. According to the Pellon Insul-fleece directions, I am to put it between the 2 pieces of batting. When I try to do some simple straight-line quilting, make fabrics shift terribly ... even when pinned with safety pins. (see picture)

I've tried the walking foot and fabric still shifts. I feel like there is too much material in the middle but this the Pellon directions call for 2 layers of batting. I'm tired of ripping stitches. Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Sharon

That’s why I always try to make those type of things larger than I need. After quilting I cut them to size.

I would use more pins.

Have you changed the presser foot pressure setting?

I cant tell from your picture but it looks like you have a small stitch length. Try a 3.0 setting to see if that helps. You might try a little bit of glue stick to hold the layers. They are probably sliding against each other.

I also make projects bigger, quilt and then cut to size as directed. It saves your sanity from these situations.

Good luck! Love the fabric!

I'm laughing at myself because I sew with the lid of my machine open. Hence never noticed the dial to adjust the press foot pressure...and I've looked for it before. Hahaha I'll give that a try. And I'll probably cut materials larger going forward as well.

Rhonda K, my stitch length is a 3.0 but I agree the stitches do look small. I think I need to take all the suggestions here and play with a scrap sandwich to see what works best.

Thanks to everyone for you advice.

Sharon

I almost went to something like 6 stitches to an inch when I tried quilting a potholder.

If you notice the ready-made ones - the stitching is quite long.

I think "less" pressure on the presser foot helped.

Yep, ease up on the presser foot pressure so you can slide over the stack of fabrics and not push some fabrics ahead of the others.

I glue baste potholders, all layers, and everything stays exactly in place. I use a longer stitch and less pressure.

Are you alternating direction of stitching? Top to bottom on one strip and then bottom to top on the next. Or you might decide to first make your stitching farther apart and then fill in between. Do you need the stitching lines so close together? Of course, use your walking foot on a project that has several layers.
