Default Viking Opal and quilting rulers

I have a Viking Opal as a travel machine for my motorhome. I also have a Bernina 440 and a Handiquilter Sweet 16 at home. I use rulers quite a bit on the S16, standard long arm 1/4” plexiglass style. My Viking dealer sells a ruler foot for the Opal, but says it needs thinner rulers. Has anyone used standard 1/4” rulers with a domestic machine, Viking especially? However any information would help. We are out 3-4 months at a time, and I would like to sometimes do some quilting in addition to piecing.

I have not done so. I am looking into doing some ruler work I haven't found what I want yet. I am sure there will be others here that can give you, and me, some better ideas on what is best to use.

just watched a you tube on this.....said you can use the standard 1/4 longarm rulers but on a low shank machine.....they are too thick to be used in back of the foot....so some ruler manufacturers have made thinner rulers to fit around the back of the low shank machine foot.....from what your dealer is telling you, I am assuming the Opal is a low shanked machine.....I would follow the dealers advice especially if your machine is still under warranty....

You can usually use them in front and on side but not behind low shank machine feet. Hope this helps

Thanks folks. I had my machine out for some FMQ, and i took a good look at the space behind the foot. As some of you thought, it is too low for a 1/4” ruler. Sigh. Guess I will just FMQ stuff on this machine and do any ruler work on the Sweetie at home. I am certainly not interested in acquiring more rulers!
