One of my favourite blocks is the humble tumbler. Here is a quick tutorial on how to incorporate this shape into a block (See Picture 1)

Cut 4 x 3.5" tumbler blocks. Take four x 5" charm squares and cut them into 2 x 2.5" pieces (See picture 2)

Sew the 2.5" pieces onto either side of the tumbler (See picture 3). Trim the block back to 4.5" x 3.5" Maker sure you find the centre of the tumbler by folding in half lengthwise and finger pressing.

To make the centre block, sew 3 x 2.25" squares together. Use a contrasting fabric for your centre square.

Trim back to 4.5" square, remembering to measure from the centre so block is even.

Add 2.25" x 4.5" rectangle to the top and bottom of your 3 squares and trim back to 4.5" square

For the corner blocks cut 4 x 3.5" squares.

Make the rows as shown in Picture 1 and join them together.

Very interesting...I guess any block that uses those "peaky" and "spike" units could use the tumbler unit instead...

    thanks

You are correct. Now that is something to try.

I have never seen the tumbler used in this way. I like it.
