On Sept. 26 I took the plunge and shared my first post on this board, my MIL's 90th birthday gift, an appliqued memory quilt. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-155965-1.htm It was presented to her at her surprise party on August 5th. The entire extended family was there for the celebration. You were all so kind with your comments and she was equally complimentary. I got the nicest thank you note that told how she unwrapped it every day to absorb all the details. Well, sadly, she only had it for two months. After suffering critical injuries in a fall on an escalator (at a senior trip to a casino, no less) she died on Oct. 8th, just 13 days short of her actual 90th birthday. Her funeral is Thursday and my husband informed me they are foregoing the usual spray of flowers on the casket and using the quilt instead. It brought me to tears. I am so honored they are using it as a final tribute to such an amazing woman. Once the funeral is over, the quilt will come home with my husband to hang in our office as a celebration of her life and all she accomplished.
You never know in what ways your creations touch another person. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to make this for her, and didn't hesitate. Please give your loved ones an extra hug tonight and keep on quilting! Thanks for listening and understanding my gratitude and pain.

I know the loss is sad, but what an incredible celebration of life. You were such a big part of that with the memory quilt and it sounds like she found it a blessing and it held lots of memories and comfort. You were so fortunate that you got to be part of that depth of happiness that you created for her. Take care of each other and know that you made her incredibly happy.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Sending gentle hugs to her whole family. What a wonderful gift you created for her and how marvelous that she appreciated and loved it. Whoever decided it was to be used in lew of the spray of flowers understands what a special thing the quilt is. And I am very happy that it will come home to your husband where he too can love and appreciate it everyday. It sounds to me like your mil lived life every single day right up until her death.

So sorry for your loss! I know how you feel, my DGM passed away three weeks short of her 100th b-day peacefully in her sleep. We were planning on a HUGE celebration for her.

May God be with you and your husband as your hearts heal from your loss. I am glad you were able to give it to your MIL before her death and that you knew she loved it.

Hugs and Kleenex to you. I was amazed that at almost 90 she was going to a casino and have some fun! To be that spry! She must be doing a jig in heaven!!
