When I was in grade school we learned to make these May baskets but we also used them as bug catchers and as fortune tellers.

You can add a pipe cleaner for a handle or you can write fortunes for the fortune teller.

First we will make the Bug Catcher

For a fortune teller write a color on each of the eight sections on the top of the flaps. Inside write a number on each section. Then pull up the inside flaps and write a fortune on each section. So you ask them to choose a color and open that color and then choose a number and open that flap to read their fortune!

Take a sheet of copy paper and fold one corner and match it to the other side. Press the folded edge down sharply making sure the corner is as accurate as y ou can.

Okay now for the Paper Box. I learned this from a coworker years ago who was from Pakistan. She learned to make them as a kid when they went camping. She said they fly if you hold them over the smoke of the campfire and get smoke in side them.

I just like making them for the kids. They do crush easily tho. You can make them from Christmas paper and use them as Christmas ornaments

Repeat the steps above to get a square piece of paper. And do the folding from corner to corner.

Take the tail(bottom of the triangle) and fold it up and over to the side

    Hold it over

And tear off the part that hangs over- tear it as even with the edge as y ou can so it will stay tucked in

Tuck the piece you just shortened into the pocket in the paper

then do the same on the other half on this side

Turn it over and do the same on the other side so you have all 4 of them tucked in

fold the whole so you now have the smooth side facing you with the folded part inside

It should look like this now with the hole at the top. You can gently blow into the hole and blow it up like a balloon. Mine is a bit ragged looking because I used the tip of my scissors to make the hole a bit bigger. You shouldn't have to do this but if it is hard to blow then you can gently make it a bigger hole. I also sometimes have to gently pull the paper sides open a bit to help the air to fill it up.

This is what it will look like while it is blowing up - The hole got bigger than I wanted.

Instead of folding to the middle - Push in two of the sides

collapse it and make sure the edges match so it is folded evenly

Fold one triangle up to the top

fold the other two in the other side the same way

    torn even

TA DAH!! Here is the Paper Box!

Fold up the second flap on this side

Fold the side corners into the middle

I wonder how many fortunes have been told using the paper boxes.
    Sure brought back memories.

We call them chatterboxes here in the UK. My DD makes them by the 100's... always asking me to "pick a colour"!

    Hugs
