Hi everybody! I thought that you might just be curious as to when I am going to start my next quilt on here. I have been asked several times in PM's and in emails from you nice people. I am tying a Jacob's Ladder right now for my SIL, Sherry, and then I'll be starting one that I have been hired/commissioned to make. It is going to be a Challenge and a half. Let me tell you the story of my upcoming quilt I call "Pauline's Quilt".

NOTE: The McCall's Quilting contest ends tomorrow night and the finalists in this round are suppose to find out by Friday, August 6th. If I am a finalist, (which I am very confident that I will be with all the help I know I got from all of you here on the QB), then this next project may have to be worked on and then put aside for a while, while I design and make my "1st Challenge round" quilt. So, this quilt could take a while. So, here is the story so far of Pauline's Quilt.

This is a long story, so I'll try to make it short. It started back in Feb. My husband Daniel's cousin, Pauline, asked me to make her a quilt. I have EQ6 and we decided on a couple of blocks and colors, and I printed it out for her, along with the fabric requirements. It was going to be an 8 Point Star block and a chain block (like an X). It was really cute. Here are the blocks we chose.

On June 26, it was Daniels family reunion. Pauline and Fred came and Pauline brought the materials that she had picked out. After the reunion, they came over to our house and brought it over. That is when the fun began! It was so funny. Pauline had decided exactly what colors she wanted in the chain blocks, so we started on the 8 point star blocks. She already knew what color she wanted the 8 point stars, and wrote them in. We just had to figure out what colors to use for the rest of the pieces in it.

Pauline had bought 6 colors to begin with. The snake color, the aqua, dark blue with glitter, red, green and white on white. BTW, the blue with glitter feels like Rubber!!! It is stiff and does not feel like regular material. I can't believe she wants it in a quilt!

I forgot to tell you when this all started in Feb. that we agreed on a price for making the top. Anyways, Fred's favorite color is red, so they wanted some red in the quilt. Then they thought some green would be nice too. Then, she changed her mind.

Pauline decided that she wanted more blues and purples to go in the 8 Point Star (8 PS), so picked one of each that I had, and added them. Now there are 8 materials. They are so similar in color to the snake which was suppose to be the main color though, I didn't know how it would look. Then, she changed her mind.

Pauline decided that instead of the 2 blocks that she had originally chose, she would rather have a Carpenter's Star block and the 2nd block could be just a framed 8PS, without the corner pieces or anything else that was in the original choice. Now, the Carpenter's Star (CS) block has 104 pieces per block! That's alot more work than before. I didn't say anything at this point though. I never really even thought about it, as we were busy at the time. They went home.

I designed the 8PS block on EQ6, designed the quilt she wanted, scanned in the 8 fabrics to use in the quilt picture, made a picture of the quilt, using her color choices, and emailed it to her. I was hoping that she would see that the pattern in the CS is almost non-existent in the colors that she had chose. Then, she changed her mind.

This is the design with her fabrics scanned in to draw it with.

Pauline decided that instead of 110" X 110" or so she guessed, the quilt needs to be 98" X 120". But, she didn't change her mind on the colors. I decided to go to the LQS and buy some more "blue and purple" that would go better with her quilt. I bought a med. aqua and med. plum, both marbled fabrics. I sent "comparison" pictures to her, explaining how you wouldn't see much of the pattern using 2 darks for the CS. (See the New Fabrics picture) You would be able to see the pattern alot better with these 2 fabrics instead of the dark ones. Then, she changed her mind.

These are the new Blue and Purple that I bought to see if she would like them better.

Pauline decided that she liked the aqua real well, and the plum was alright. Add both of them to the quilt, but keep the dark blue and dark purple too! So then we had 10 colors for the quilt. I told her I had to make my sister-in-law a throw first, then I'd make hers. She's in no hurry. About a week later Pauline called me. She had changed her mind!

Oh! I forgot to tell you that before Pauline called, I got an email from Fred saying to hold off on making the quilt as Pauline had changed her mind again, and needed to talk to me before I started it. I emailed back and said that I needed to talk to her too, about the price.

So.... Pauline called. I told her that with the CS and 8PS blocks instead, I was going to have to have more money. So, I added $50.00.

Pauline had changed her mind about the 8 PS block. She had been "doodling" and added some little pieces that "looked kind of like kites", to tie it all together. She said she wanted them done in a red too. They would be in the corners of the 8 PS blocks, and it "made it almost look like wagon wheels". She said that she had drawn them onto the picture I'd sent her and she'd send it back to me so I could see what she wanted. All I'd have to do was make a pattern for them..........Only! And, guess what else she did??? You guessed it, she changed her mind about the fabrics again!

Pauline's Idea with the "kite" shapes.

While she was doodling, she got to thinking that it would be really pretty with a little more color. So, she colored in the 8PS in some different colors and liked the looks of it. So,.... she went shopping and bought some more materials to make the 8PS out of, and to make their background with. Are you ready for this??? She bought a dark & light of each of these 4 colors to do the 8PS out of. The light fabrics will be for the background of the star, the darks will be for the 8PS. OK. And the new 8 colors are.....(2 of each).....
1. Blue
2. Purple
3. Yellow
4. Orange....(Yes, you read that right!)

Then, she also bought another piece of red, to make the kites with. It doesn't even match the other red that will be in the corners of the CS that will match up with them. PLUS....She found another dark blue that she liked and wants in the quilt. So, now we are up to 20 different fabrics. She mailed them to me.

You can kind of see how she wants them in her picture above.

I told her I'd have to see about making the "Kites", if I could figure a way. I think I will have to Paper Piece the 4 corners of the 8PS now. Here is another drawing she sent me a few days later, to show more of the way she wants them to look.

This is Pauline's Kite picture.

This is the Carpenter's Star that I'm talking about, for those of you who haven't seen my pattern in the tutorials, or either of the quilts I made out of this block and posted on here.

So, this is what it all boils down too.

1. There are 9 colors to make the Carpenter's Star blocks out of. They are now to be mixed and matched, (I really should NOT say 'matched'). Use each of the colors for the main part of the CS, and also for the Point parts on other blocks. (Example--Snake for big star and Aqua for the points. Then use Purple or something else for the big star and Snake for the points.) Understand?

2. There are 8 colors for the 8 Point Star blocks. I am not sure if they are suppose to be Mixed and matched or not. She said something about "lights for background, darks for stars", but when I got the "Pauline's Idea" picture, some of them are different colors. I'll have to talk to her when I get ready to make it and find out for sure.

3. There are 2 different reds for the corners of the CS and the 8PS. (That don't match.)

4. There is a white-on-white for the background of the CS, and the frame on the 8PS blocks.

I am now sending the last pictures. These are the colors that are for each of the blocks. Now you want to hear something really weird?
I can't wait to get started on it! The CS is my absolute favorite block and this quilt sounds like a real challenge! I'm still thinking that if it's going to be too time consuming to do the "kites", I may raise the price another $25 or something. What do you think?

After I make the top, she is going to have me take it to Tom's (where I got Swish! quilted) and have him quilt it. Then, I'll get it back and have to do the binding. It's going to be a lot of work, but I think it will be fun too. So, that's it. I'm thinking that I'll put it on the QB like I did with Swish!, "My Experimental Bargello" and make it online if there is any interest. Do you think it would be fun to see or not?
Just curious. I'm not sure if it would be exciting enough, like Swish was.

Well, that is the story of my Upcoming quilt. I hope there are no more changes before I start it. I want Pauline's quilt to be awesome. I would hate for her to be disappointed in it, especially after paying so much between all the material and my fee. You know? The first thing that I plan to do is make 2 or 3 CS with good contrast. Then I'll make one with 2 darks and send Pauline a picture. Maybe then she'll drop some of the dark blues and purples. I hope so. If not, then she can't say that she didn't realize it'd look like that anyways.

Then, I figure that I'll make about 5 CS out of colors we will be using. Then I'll make four 8PS and lay them out 3x3. Then I'll know more about how it would look. I'll also send that to Pauline, so she can see how all of the colors are going to look together. I really don't want her to be disappointed. Plus, if I don't like it, it will be harder to enjoy making it.

So, tell me what you think of all this..... Is it just me, or do you wonder too....(how this might turn out?)

These are the colors for the 8 Point Stars and the reds.

I realize this is pretty long, but I just think it's a funny story with all of it's changes. So, what do you think?
Do you think there are too many colors, or should I say too many similar colors? Would you like to see what I do along the way? or should I just post a picture of it when I get the top all finished? It's up to you.

Thank you Sharon. I hope this isn't too long now that I'm done with the story. Tomorrow is the last day on the voting, so it won't be long until we know! CORRECTION!!! The voting is over now!!! I was thinking it was still Aug 1st! I just went to the site to vote and it's over!!!

Now, we wait to see who are the finalist, they all make the 1st challenge round quilt and then it'll be time to vote again, starting Sept. 15 thru Oct 5th.

Keep your fingers crossed with me.
