What size 4 patch do you end up with using the 5" Charms? Thanks for sharing! could do this totally scrappy using one light and one dark; tossing the first cuts into a basket and then just pulling out at random. Might be kinda' fun.

4.5" - - each seam takes 1/4" off each side ... two seams off the first side, then quarter turn to make the final block, so 1/2" off that side. <wave>

Off the top of my head, I think it would end up being a 4" block, don't you think? After you sew both opposite sides of your two 5" charm squares together with 1/4" seams on opposing sides, that leaves you with 4-1/2". When cut horizontally across the middle of the block at 2-1/2", then you press the seams open, you should have 4-1/2" blocks. At least, that's what I think. I'll turn this subject over to my engineer hubby for a definite answer.

Now that I've looked at my previous response, I'm not sure if it is a 4" or a 4-1/4" or a 4-1/2". I'm confused...

If you sew 1/4" on all four sides it has to be a 4" block. Right??? I'm about to try this right now.

I made a bunch of these from Moda charm squares, and they turned out great. Thanks so much for this tutorial. I'll always use this method for making four patches. It was so much fun, I didn't want to stop when I had the necessary number of blocks.
