What size 4 patch do you end up with using the 5" Charms? Thanks for sharing! could do this totally scrappy using one light and one dark; tossing the first cuts into a basket and then just pulling out at random. Might be kinda' fun.

4.5" - - each seam takes 1/4" off each side ... two seams off the first side, then quarter turn to make the final block, so 1/2" off that side. <wave>

lkcantwell 04-03-2010 04:17 PM

Off the top of my head, I think it would end up being a 4" block, don't you think? After you sew both opposite sides of your two 5" charm squares together with 1/4" seams on opposing sides, that leaves you with 4-1/2". When cut horizontally across the middle of the block at 2-1/2", then you press the seams open, you should have 4-1/2" blocks. At least, that's what I think. I'll turn this subject over to my engineer hubby for a definite answer.

lkcantwell 04-03-2010 04:19 PM

Now that I've looked at my previous response, I'm not sure if it is a 4" or a 4-1/4" or a 4-1/2". I'm confused...

Quilt Mom 04-05-2010 05:18 AM

Thanks for the tute! What a great way to make 4patches!

If you sew 1/4" on all four sides it has to be a 4" block. Right??? I'm about to try this right now.

craftybear 04-08-2010 01:38 AM

wow, very clever, thanks for sharing

lkcantwell 04-08-2010 02:42 PM

I made a bunch of these from Moda charm squares, and they turned out great. Thanks so much for this tutorial. I'll always use this method for making four patches. It was so much fun, I didn't want to stop when I had the necessary number of blocks.

I am sewing my squares togeather as shown and they are coming out real good. Thank you so much for this helpful arrangement.

sasseyib 04-23-2010 07:41 AM

I meant to mention that I am cutting all my patches after sewing togeather to a squared 4" patch.

okay ... the finished size will be 4" because!
first seam on both sides takes the 5" down to 4.5" ... then you cut in half
turn the two pieces face to face, but a quarter turn, so that you are sewing across the previous seam ... cut apart - -at which point, both four patches are 4.5" square.
Then, when you stitch the four patch into a block or quilt, you take a quarter inch seam allowance all around and now the piece is 4" square - - I was wrong about the 4.5"
This is a GREAT technique. Thank you again for the tutorial! <wave>

Lady-T 11-30-2010 01:25 PM

Well, that turned out quite nicely!
That buttery yellow seems to really add some bright and richness to your quilt that plain old white just can't do, eh?
I am so glad that you posted your quilt picture. It makes the whole tutorial come to life, doesn't it? <wave>

Thanks, Omak for the kind words. For me this was a "big" project. I usually do wall hangings and table runners. This tutorial just inspired me.
