I had posted a quilt made with these four patches. Some ladies wanted to know what size I started with. I used 5" charms for a different way to make 4 patches.
So, hopefully you will understand my pics... :D
Step 1 - Sew 2- 5" squares right sides together on each side.
Step 2- Cut result in half between two seams at 2. 5 inches
Step 3 - you will end up with two pieces 5" by 2.5"

Step one - sew both sides

Step two- cut result in half

Step three - you will get this

Step 4 - Iron the result - seams to one side
Step 5 - Put the two pieces together nesting seams - sew on both sides of block - your other seam should be horizontal.
Step 6- Cut this piece into half - just like you did the first time.

Step 5 - sew on both sides again

Step 6 - cut into 2.5 sections

Step 7 - this is what you get
Final - iron open and you end up with 2 - four patches.
This is easier than it seems especially when you chain piece.
I did each side seams one at a time. took the chain out and did the other side still attached.

Any questions just ask .. first tute.....

WOW! Kind of like making QSTs in squares instead....clever.....thanks for sharing!
If you start with a 5" square of fabric, what size 4-patch do you end up with? Do you "lose" inches like in making HSTs and QSTs?

Bevanger 02-02-2010 11:49 AM

great way to do them. thanks

dglvr 02-02-2010 12:25 PM

Thats really neat. Thanks for sharing. :-D

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-02-2010 12:26 PM

Turns out to be a 4.5 inch 4patch. I would assume that if you wanted say 6.5 inch patches you would start with 7" charms
This is so much easier than all those little squares!

KR 02-02-2010 03:22 PM

Thanks, liblue....amen to that!

Another method I am going to have to try. Thank you for doing this. I am always looking for shortcuts and new ways of doing things and getting more accurate results. I think this is one of those.

k3n 02-05-2010 03:52 AM

This is excellent - thanks so much! :-D

wendiq 02-06-2010 07:26 AM

Clever.....I'm adding this to my file.....Thanks so much.... :D

omak 02-07-2010 08:02 AM

Have you tried doing a nine patch with the same technique?
You end up with a positive and a negative nine patch, but it gets the job done <wave>
Good tutorial, too!

jamsbuying 02-08-2010 02:44 PM

oh, I MUST try this. Thanks for sharing.

NauDeeGal 02-08-2010 03:59 PM

Thank you for sharing this idea.

Another must try for me too!

Good tutorial, too!

Best to cut beginning squares that are divisible by 3.
Two squares, right sides together, stitch down the left and right side.
Cut the square into three pieces, parallel to your stitches.
a sample: nine inch square ... cut into three-3inch pieces.
open the sewn pieces up, take the center "free" pieces, sew to sewn pieces in a manner that will give you a sewn piece with alternating colors.
After pressing, place the striped squares, right sides together and stitch down the sides ACROSS the previous stitching.
Again, cut into three equal pieces - - yield: two pieces of six little blocks, and two pieces that are three blocks each. One of the pieces will be light/dark/light -- the other pieces will be dark/light/dark.
the free pieces will be sewn to each of the 6-block pieces in a manner that will result in two nine patch blocks, one with majority light, one with majority dark.
Does that help? <wave>

This is really a slick method. Thanks for sharing. I also like the nine patch idea, too.

For a really scrappy look instead of putting tow of the same colors together make a bunch and then mix up the halfs and you will have no two alike... This is Billy Lauders method she is so awsome to watch and she is on www.zeeltv.com right now withthe barjello and the quick scrappy nine patches...
Great demo...
