first seam on both sides takes the 5" down to 4.5" ... then you cut in half turn the two pieces face to face, but a quarter turn, so that you are sewing across the previous seam ... cut apart - -at which point, both four patches are 4.5" square. Then, when you stitch the four patch into a block or quilt, you take a quarter inch seam allowance all around and now the piece is 4" square - - I was wrong about the 4.5" This is a GREAT technique. Thanks, Omak for the kind words. For me this was a "big" project. I usually do wall hangings and table runners. This tutorial just inspired me.
