Does anyone have definitive instructions to make 4-sided placemats??
|

I found a link. http://feeddogsdown.blogspot.com/201...placemats.html

Looks cute but I couldn't quite grasp it. I'll read it again later and maybe it will sink in.

I see a Christmas idea here. Thanks! |
cute idea.... but I need to focus on "practical" stuff like clothes and quilts, furniture finished and cabinets stained ha ha :D... maybe in the future after I finish the other thousand projects....
|
I made a set of these and worked great. One side is Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and everyday all in one.

I like the idea, so you don't need batting, right? or do you?
|
thank you!!!!!
|
Love this idea!
|
It says to use iron-on.....just to give it some body.
|
Thanks so much!
|
cool idea it would make nice gift for xmas

I have made these placemats and they are very easy to do and lots of fun. I have the template but it isn't really necessary as long as you cut all the sides exactly the same. When they are finished it is like a book and you can just flip the pages for a clean placemat. Great for grandkids!
|
How is it sewn together? Can you please give a quick tutorial about it? thank you:)

nice idea but still don't get it brain isn't working

You have 4 different fabrics cut the same size oval. Take 2 fabrics, right sides together and sew around halfway. Take another fabric and put it right side together with ont of the open sides and sew that around 1/2. Take the last piece and add it to the open sides and sew each 1/2, leaving an opening to turn. Turn to the right side, press (and I topstitched so they would lay flatter). When you open them you have 4 choices for each placemat.
It's not letting me add the photos so I may have to put them in a new line. |
Earlier posting gave this site http://dunnvillequiltguild.com/uploads/2010_January.pdf

They aren't hard...just a tad too bulky for me. :)
|
Sew cute!! I want to try one - it might be a frog experience.
|
Ya but they are thick and don't lay flat on the table. so you can't "use them" and if you just "display" them they look like books laying on the table. MY take I have some
|
Thanks!! |

When I made my first one I thought the same thing but I was having a blond day and arranging the semi circles so I had 1 on one side and 3 on the other. Then my friends pointed out my illogical thinking and as long as you have two flaps on each side they aren't thick at all. I did use heavy fusible interfacing not batting or fleece.

Thanks for the link. That's pretty neat for a quick gift.
|
One note on the tute at feeddogsdown is that you might want to use a light weight interfacing on the fabric before you cut it. I made these in a little workshop at our LQS and the owner and her elves had worked with batting; heavy interface and finally hit the sweet spot with the light weight interface. Gives the placemat a little body but not so puffy that a stemmed glass will topple over.
they are a blast - we never know what fabric we are going to see when the boys set the table! |
very cool idea.

I'm working on a couple of customer projects but as soon as I get them done, I want to try this. I think my DIL would like a set like this (with a runner) for Christmas. They have a large dining table so this would be fun to decorate.
If no one else gets to it first, I'll take pics as I go and post a tute. I read through it but don't quite understand how the fabrics get sewn to create the flipping part. It will probably make sense once I'm working on it. Wish me luck!! |
