Does anyone have definitive instructions to make 4-sided placemats??

craftybear 07-07-2011 08:13 AM

will surf and see if I can find anything

qbquilts 07-07-2011 08:17 AM

I found a link. http://feeddogsdown.blogspot.com/201...placemats.html

Looks cute but I couldn't quite grasp it. I'll read it again later and maybe it will sink in.

craftybear 07-07-2011 08:35 AM

thanks for the link

You are sewing each piece of fabric to two other pieces. If you could stand the placemat on edge & open it to a cross or an "X" you could see all four sides.

I see a Christmas idea here. Thanks!

Leota 07-07-2011 09:22 AM

cute idea.... but I need to focus on "practical" stuff like clothes and quilts, furniture finished and cabinets stained ha ha :D... maybe in the future after I finish the other thousand projects....

Zhillslady 07-07-2011 09:24 AM

I made a set of these and worked great. One side is Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and everyday all in one.

Thanks for the explanation - I needed that! I thought it was two lined ovals (double-faced), then lined up and sewed together down the middle. Hmmm, middle seam might be "ugly" when beginning to start and stop!

Your explanation and the link will help me make lovely Christmas gifts!

SueDor 07-07-2011 12:55 PM

I like the idea, so you don't need batting, right? or do you?

juanabean 07-07-2011 04:58 PM

thank you!!!!!

juanabean 07-07-2011 04:59 PM

Love this idea!

juanabean 07-07-2011 05:00 PM

It says to use iron-on.....just to give it some body.

juanabean 07-07-2011 05:01 PM

Thanks so much!

capucine 07-08-2011 02:49 AM

I have made these placemats and they are very easy to do and lots of fun. I have the template but it isn't really necessary as long as you cut all the sides exactly the same. When they are finished it is like a book and you can just flip the pages for a clean placemat. Great for grandkids!

capucine 07-08-2011 03:45 AM

How is it sewn together? Can you please give a quick tutorial about it? thank you:)

Dragonfly Nana 07-08-2011 04:01 AM

Very cool gift idea.

stichinluvr 07-08-2011 04:28 AM

I have the template and pattern and they are really easy. I've made them for my gkids.

fran624 07-08-2011 04:30 AM

nice idea but still don't get it brain isn't working

stichinluvr 07-08-2011 04:55 AM

You have 4 different fabrics cut the same size oval. Take 2 fabrics, right sides together and sew around halfway. Take another fabric and put it right side together with ont of the open sides and sew that around 1/2. Take the last piece and add it to the open sides and sew each 1/2, leaving an opening to turn. Turn to the right side, press (and I topstitched so they would lay flatter). When you open them you have 4 choices for each placemat.

It's not letting me add the photos so I may have to put them in a new line.

They aren't hard...just a tad too bulky for me. :)

munchkinmama 07-08-2011 05:12 AM

Sew cute!! I want to try one - it might be a frog experience.

sandisquiltedtouch 07-08-2011 05:41 AM

Ya but they are thick and don't lay flat on the table. so you can't "use them" and if you just "display" them they look like books laying on the table. MY take I have some

That's right. We made these in our ASG group and they were so cute. You can do four seasons, holidays, characters etc. You have to really study the pattern and work slowly when constructing cause they can be a bit confusing. We all did some frogging.

They lay completely flat, just like any placemat.

cmilton 07-08-2011 07:20 AM

looks cute but I still don't get it. Maybe someone on the board could write better tut.

dixiechunk 07-08-2011 07:47 AM

I have made these. They are easy and so cute. Kids love them.

Well, I was just wondering why four sides but you answered my question.

Rainbow 07-08-2011 08:54 AM

Sounds like fun.

Mine lay pretty flat, and I do "use" them.

dixiechunk 07-08-2011 11:12 AM

When I made my first one I thought the same thing but I was having a blond day and arranging the semi circles so I had 1 on one side and 3 on the other. Then my friends pointed out my illogical thinking and as long as you have two flaps on each side they aren't thick at all. I did use heavy fusible interfacing not batting or fleece.

Thanks for the link. That's pretty neat for a quick gift.

SharBear 07-08-2011 02:09 PM

One note on the tute at feeddogsdown is that you might want to use a light weight interfacing on the fabric before you cut it. I made these in a little workshop at our LQS and the owner and her elves had worked with batting; heavy interface and finally hit the sweet spot with the light weight interface. Gives the placemat a little body but not so puffy that a stemmed glass will topple over.

they are a blast - we never know what fabric we are going to see when the boys set the table!

klarina 07-08-2011 03:58 PM

very cool idea.

vickig626 07-08-2011 04:08 PM

I'm working on a couple of customer projects but as soon as I get them done, I want to try this. I think my DIL would like a set like this (with a runner) for Christmas. They have a large dining table so this would be fun to decorate.

If no one else gets to it first, I'll take pics as I go and post a tute. I read through it but don't quite understand how the fabrics get sewn to create the flipping part. It will probably make sense once I'm working on it. Wish me luck!!
