Big Star Lap Quilt
As shown in the Missouri Star Quilt Company video on www.youtube.com A derivative tutorial. The original is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkm3n...ature=g-high-u provided with permission from: Al Doan [email protected] (888) 571-1122 www.MissouriQuiltCo.com 63” square I made mine in red, white and blue. Any colors look nice. My quilt was donated to Miracle Quilts for wounded soldiers of Oxford MI. Fabric Requirements: Color 1 & 2 (my red & blue) ¾ yard each Color 3 (star background, corner squares, and sashing) 2 ¼ yard Color 4 (my navy, snowball corners and sashing cornerstones) 3/4 yard Borders ¾ yard Cutting instructions for 4 big star blocks: 10” squares – 8 red, 8 white, 8 blue 6 ½” squares – 16 white 5” squares – 16 solid navy 2 ½” squares - 9 solid navy (cornerstones) 2 ½” x 24 ½” strips – 10 pieces cut from 7 width of fabric strips for sashing. (Join all 7 strips before cutting into 24 ½” lengths) 4 ½” wide borders cut from 6 width of fabric strips. (Join all 6 strips before cutting) Method: Sew ¼” seams around the outside of pairs of 10” squares. Blue/Red, Blue/White, Red/White (you will have 2 sets of each color combination for each big star) Cut diagonally twice on all blocks. Press open and square up to 6 ½” Handle blocks gently as they have bias edges. Stitch the 5” navy squares to one corner of each of the white 6 ½” diagonally. (Snowball) Press toward the corner, trim. Assemble into 4 large stars as shown in the diagram. Start with the center, make a pinwheel. Then place blue/white and red/white squares to extend the arms of the star. Lastly, place the white/navy snowball squares in the corners. Join into rows, and then join rows matching corners of blocks. Add the 24 ½” strips as sashing to the large stars and use the 2 ½” navy squares as the corner stones. The sashing is important as it will stabilize the bias edges of the stars. After the 4 stars are joined together, measure through the center of the quilt top to obtain the measurement for the borders. Attach the side borders, and then do the same for the top and bottom borders. A derivative tutorial. Beautiful. That is so nice of you to get permission to do this. I have been wanting to make one of these forever. Just hope my looks just like yours when I'm done. Do you cut your strips/triangle by hand or do you use a die cutter? Thanks for sharing.

I watched Jenny do hers on the Missouri Star Quilt Co. ap on my ipad. It is a great quick quilt and your version is lovely!

Love your quilt! Thank you for getting permission to share AND for providing the yardage measurements. That will make getting the material so much easier or even (gasp!) using some from my stash!
|
Thanks for the measurements and tute.
|
I have learned so much from the Missouri Star Quilt Company and recommend it to all new quilters. Jenny is so down home .

Jean,
Thanks so much for sharing your yardage and instructions! I'm really excited because I have th 6.5" square, 5" charm square and the 2.5" strip cutter dies for my GO! This will be my frist 'real' GO! project since all I've done up until now is the tumbler block. And thanks to Jenny too for giving her permission to post it! (I had already watched the video and saved it in my You-tube file!) |
This can also be done with Charm Packs. Missouri Star has a pretty one today as their Daily Deal. It is Rustling Leaves by Cheryl Haybes for Benartex Fabrics for 99 cents! [h=2][/h]

I bought 4 layer cakes of Orchard House so I could duplicate Jenny's quilt. They have been calling me for weeks. I even cut the cream background 10" pieces a couple of weeks ago, so I can just start sewing. I'm making 2 King quilts. And I received a 401 Slant-O-Matic Singer for Christmas! Just waiting, I guess, on my 1/4" foot to come in the mail. Yea, that's my excuse!! But, after seeing your quilt, I might just use my Bernina and start sewing right away. Yours is very attractive!!

Oh what a beautiful Quilt! and thank you so very much, for sharing! Sooooo very, very wonderful of you. Bless your Heart
My Quilting Friend! |
I made this quilt also. This one was for my granddaughter for Christmas. I did not put the sashing strip in but did snowball the corner blocks. Really easy quilt, I will make another!

I'm making one of these too! I'm supposed to be working on another project, but I'm mad at it right now, so I started the big star. Here's the first:

great job!

Omg. I made one block yesterday. Took almost 3 hours. Mostly un-sewing.. Seems I could not pick up the pieces from the design board, carry them to my machine and sew down the right side... Then wondering just how I scouts have sewn the wrong sides of the strips together. Next one has to be so much easier. Just could not make a second one yesterday . :). Wondering if anyone has days like this.

I so much want to make this quilt, however I am not so sure I want that large of blocks. Would you think I could start with 8 inch squares and adjust corner blocks to fit? Just a thought. :)

I hope I did not offend in my reply. I wanted to answer the original question. I didn't mean to reply to another's answer. This is my first post to this forum and not sure I did it correctly.
