I have a hint for binding a charity quilt that saves me a lot of time and looks. I really can't do the hand quilting for binding anymore.

Since I like my charity quilts to have good sturdy binding, I found the following method not only easier, but faster than regular binding methods.

1. I start with a 3 inch wide strip the length of 2 sides of the quilt. For a 45 X 60 quilt, you need 2 strips 3 inches wide x 125 inches long (good idea to have a few extra inches).

2. Turn each side of the 125 + a couple of inches strip. While holding the fold, make a long/wide zig zag down the middle where the raw edges meet.

3. Fold the strip with the raw edges inside the fold and press.
When you finish pressing the whole length of the strip you have a 2 inch wide double fold binding strip.

4. Attach it to your quilt like regular binding then Zig Zag the strip in place, making sure the corner is mitered properly.

5. Bind the other side and end, the same way. If you happen to leave too much open binding on the quilt, simply sew in another row of Zig Zag.

In less than an hour, you have made 7 yards of double fold binding and bound your 45 X 60 quilt.

Quilt Mom 02-28-2011 05:47 AM

Thanks! I will have to try it.

GypsyRse1 02-28-2011 06:29 AM

Guess I'm dense... I don't understand the directions

#1piecemaker 02-28-2011 06:38 AM

Great idea. And, a very pretty quilt I might add.

carrot 02-28-2011 07:23 AM

I'm with you--- not sure about the 1st part and the raw edge

wendiq 02-28-2011 08:14 AM

I know I am being "dense", but I'm not sure what you are describing in the first 3 steps. Could you show some pictures for this part????

kwilter 02-28-2011 08:46 AM

I don't get it either..."4. Attach it to your quilt like regular binding then Zig Zag the strip in place, making sure the corner is mitered properly.

5. Bind the other side and end, the same way. If you happen to leave too much open binding on the quilt, simply sew in another row of Zig Zag." Do you sew around the quilt edge 3 times? What is "open binding?" I guess I am more visual than not.

It sounds like a great idea. WHAT SIZE OF NEEDLE AND WHAT MATERIALS ARE YOU USING TO TUE YOUR QUILT?

Lilrain 02-28-2011 11:40 AM

I also do alot of charity quilts and love time saving tips, but I am not understanding this one

lindalou 02-28-2011 12:25 PM

I don't understand either??? Help Linda

Dkm 02-28-2011 12:34 PM

Need more info.

JudyMN 02-28-2011 04:10 PM

I can not picture it. Guess I am a visual learner.

Ceil 02-28-2011 04:21 PM

I got lost on step 2 but would love to learn this method.

Charming 02-28-2011 04:28 PM

you totally lost me after cutting the strips...lol, but i would love to know how to do it.

Sadiemae 02-28-2011 04:28 PM

Maybe someone could do a tutorial with pictures...

cmilton 02-28-2011 04:30 PM

could we have pictures? It sounds good but I don't get it.

luckylindy333 02-28-2011 05:37 PM

I don't get it either, but I am more visual, too. I'd love to see pictures...

zkosh 02-28-2011 07:32 PM

I really appreciate the tip, but I don't quite follow it, either. I would love to see the process in pictures.

JT 02-28-2011 07:47 PM

I don't understand how this is being done. Help??

katigirl 03-01-2011 12:28 AM

Thanks for the tip. :)

nantucketsue 03-01-2011 02:47 AM

Sounds like it must be a good idea, but I can't quite figure it out either. Please post a diagram or something.

Happy Tails 03-01-2011 04:27 AM

Oh God, I'm so glad I'm not in the dense class alone lol

My dunce hat is bigger than yours!!!

quiltingnana1 03-01-2011 12:37 PM

Thanks for the tip!

jpthequilter 03-03-2011 03:21 AM

er...I just get out my curly little binding foot, some strips or commercial binding, and whiz it on both sides at once!
Some charity quilt receivers ask that you double stitch the binding, because the quilts will be washed frequently. It is a fun place to practice decorative stitches in the second stitching.

CarrieAnne 03-03-2011 05:49 AM

Thanks for the tip!

postal packin' mama 03-04-2011 09:31 AM

So do you mean to
1. lay fabric right side down and equally fold each side of the strip into the center (overlapping raw edges a bit?) and
2. then zigzag those raw edges together,
3. then press with the zigzagged raw edges in the center? then apply to quilt edge as usual?
4. so the zigzagged line will be on the outer binding edge?

or am I way off base?
Thanks for any time you can give to clarifying this as it sounds like a good idea.

I was thinking it might be like this?
1.) take fabric and fold so wrong sides are together with fold on left side and raw edges matching on right side.
2.) sew a zigzag stitch starting at top right on the right side raw edges, barely catching on the far right side.
3) refold so right side is down and zig-zag stitch is in the center with right and left side meeting in the center ( basically both raw edges are in the center with the zigzag stitch holding it together ).
4) bring left side over right side and press into place.
5) place binding around quilt so that zigzag seam inside tape is facing away from quilt, pin then sew to quilt

Does that make sense or sound right???
My machine is in the shop right now so I can't make a sample to take pictures of and post.

lostsoulhelpmejebus 03-04-2011 11:21 AM

Dang! I soooo need to see pictures...heavy sigh

nantucketsue 03-04-2011 02:12 PM

Now I'm even more confused! Need pictures. I have the same problem with most descriptions, then when I see visually how it's done it all makes sense. Guess I am not alone though so I won't have a breakdown about it.

I would like pictures too !!!! Please !

Happy Tails 03-04-2011 02:24 PM

I don't mind wearing the dummy hat, but I sure would love an easier way to do bindings.......tapping foot, waiting for pics

tuckyquilter 03-04-2011 03:42 PM

I don't get it either. Any way close up photo's of each step could be posted?
