I asked if I should birth or bind a baby quilt and got quite a few comments asking what birthing was so I'm going to try to explain it. This is my first tutorial so bear with me.

I made a baby burp cloth for this, but the same thing goes for quilts. There will be 8 pics

start with the backing laying face up

then lay the top face down

add the batting, all 3 layers should be the same size, but I can't measure very well,

sew around the outside leaving a big enough gap to pull your quilt through. I backstitch at the beginning and the end so the stitches don't pull out. trim if you need to so it's not super thick on the edges and don't forget the corners

a close up of the gap, I don't trim near the gap so I have something to fold under and sew

reach between the quilt top and backing and find the farthest corner and pull through. Keep pulling corners or side through until the whole quilt has come through the gap. Use a chopstick or your fingers to push the corners into place so they're not cut off

the hole. Tuck the top over the batting and fold in the back and sew closed, either by hand or by machine.

you are now ready to quilt. It's the top right corner where the hole was. I sewed the hole shut by machine and continued around the outside of the burp cloth. I hope this was helpful. any questions, just ask!

Nice tut! Thank you!

MarciaN 08-06-2011 10:08 AM

Thanks for the tut, sooo, what did you do, did you birth it or bind it? Thinking this would be a good way for me to do a quick baby quilt with a panel. I am completely new to quilting but think I could do this, lol.

I birthed it. It seemed more baby quilty to me that way.

Lilrain 08-06-2011 11:09 AM

how do you use this for a pillowcase?

Oh, in this part of the country we call it enveloping a quilt.

knlsmith 08-06-2011 11:49 AM

Great tute. Thanks!

Great shortcut. Could even add piping. Thanks!

sc-sunshine 08-07-2011 03:30 AM

I need this...made me think...I haven't made any burp pads for my new dgd due in december.

Jo Cypher 08-07-2011 04:13 AM

This is great! I've been trying to explain to a friend how to do it. This is so much better than what I could explain.

ncredbird 08-07-2011 04:48 AM

I Googled this about 10 days ago as I had no idea what they were talking about when the phrase "birthing a quilt" was used.
Here is an Alex Anderson video explanation:
http://www.hgtv.com/video/birthing-a...deo/index.html

The tute by sarahrachel above is a very good example.

Thanks

caspoohbear 08-07-2011 05:17 AM

I tried for a full-size quilt, and failed miserably. Somehow there was a discrepancy between my top, my batting and my backing and didn't realize it til wayyyyyy too late. had to undo the whole thing and do it the other way. Fortunately I was only tying it. but that was a lot of ties to snip

JanetLW 08-07-2011 05:36 AM

Thanks

Nolee 08-07-2011 06:41 AM

I saw a hint the other day on birthing that some might like.

At each side of the opening, sew all three fabrics together PERPENDICULAR from your seam to the edge of the opening. This will automatically make it MUCH easier in closing the gap as it will fold in your edges for you. I hope you can picture that.

SUZAG 08-07-2011 07:09 AM

And here I thought I only "birthed" two children...no wonder I'm so out of shape! Great tutorial!

SUZAG 08-07-2011 07:11 AM

OMG...I'm a regular now...just noticed it! I am too. I find it hard to read any of my other e-mails or enter my contests...you guys are killin' me!

You did good. I did not know it was called "birthing." I just thought it was turning something inside out and sewing. I never thought about it for a quilt. Thanks for the tutuorial.

patdesign 08-07-2011 08:25 AM

In the old old days we just called it pillowcasing, somehow I didn't connect "birthing" just a little too graphic for an oldie!:)

MargeD 08-07-2011 10:31 AM

Nice tut - and you explained the process beautifully. Good job.

Nolee 08-07-2011 12:06 PM

This is a wonderful way to finish a quilt for those of us who get bunches in the back of any project we quilt on our regular sewing machines. It ties beautifully!!!!.

Sandra in Minnesota 08-07-2011 03:00 PM

Thanks for the tute. I was wondering what birthing a quilt was.

sewing4224 08-07-2011 03:57 PM

You did a great job of showing and explaining it.I already knew how to do it,and you were great at it.

babygirl8 08-07-2011 05:02 PM

It makes total since, I have done two quilts and that is how I did them, just never knew that technique was referred to as Birthing..kind of funny...

lheartsl 08-07-2011 05:35 PM

This is the only way I knew how to do it.(how I was taught)
Just did my first binding....

Rebecca_S 08-08-2011 01:33 PM

Thanks! I want to make a star spin table topper for my mother in law and was wondering how to finish the edges. It seems to me that this technique might work better than binding for non-rectangular projects.

Scakes 08-08-2011 01:39 PM

Nice tute. Thanks.

Meme2six 08-09-2011 09:08 AM

Thanks for the tutorial. Babies always need burp cloths and this would make a nice shower gift.

carolaug 09-10-2011 11:33 AM

Thanks for the Tute...I am making my Uncle a really quick quilt. I am going to try this method instead of binding this time.

charity-crafter 09-13-2011 08:28 AM

I keep forgetting the order to layer and wind up having to rip out stitches. I did some luggage handle wraps, only about 4" square and kept thinking I had the correct order and then did it wrong again. Finally got it.

so, I'm bookmarking this so I have it ready when I try again.

Thanks

djvaug 09-16-2011 06:07 PM

Interesting idea. Thanks.

Thanks for the hint! Works really great. I also trim the out the batting in that area - the same amount as whatever the seam allowance. Another tip I use when "birthing" is before turning I roll one of the corners towards the side of the opening, then reach inside and grab the roll and pull it through the opening. So much easier to pull the roll through than just a corner. The rest of the quilt will follow on through.

Magoo 11-19-2011 10:01 AM

I really like the birthing method for my donation quilts. However, the backing always seems to be bigger than the front even though they are the same size. Any ideas on solving this problem? Thanks.

fred singer 11-21-2011 05:51 PM

very good job of explaing this technique
