Hello, I have had several members ask me for help with their bow tuck totes, so when i made one for my daughter this weekend, I took pictures of the steps.
This is my first official tutorial, so please be patient, there are a lot of pictures. I am only posting pictures of each step. I do not want to infringe on anything for the creator of the pattern. But I really want to help those who have it. This is for those who have a legally obtained Bow Tuck Tote Pattern from Quilt Illustrated, August 2008. All your cutting should be done and ready. This is just for assembly. FOR copyright sake, NO measurements will/ should be given anywhere in the post. Each pictured is labeled by STEP, so if you have purchased the pattern, you will be just fine. Hope this helps those who are needing it. And thanks for looking. Step 1 D Step 2 A Step 2 B Step 4 A Step 4 B Step 7 A. Inside pockets are same process Step 9. Be careful, this gets hot with fingers so close to iron. Step 10 Step 13 B. I like to put a pin in to hold while sewing Step 1 A Step 1 B. OOps. forgot to get a couple trimmings out of the way. Step 1 C Step 12 WOO HOO! ALL DONE! Step 6. Showing back side couldn't see stitching from front side at all. Step 7 B Step 8 Step 13 A Step 16 |
That is very nice of you ...so many seem to be wanting to make the tote...gee you could have layed the pieces on a cutting mat with the measurements showing lol

Great tutorial! Love that purse, have made several! :)
|
Thank you for posting this. I have the mini bow tuck pattern and the fabric, but haven't started it yet. I will save these instructions as I am a visual learner and need to see rather than read stuff. Thanks! Sara

Thank you for posting this for us :D:D:D
I just may give it a try now! |
Great tutorial!! Yours is very nice!
|
Good for you I'm sure those who are still wanting to try this will be very happy to see the pics. The directions are very easy to follow, after you have made one.
|
Thanks!
|
You're welcome to everyone! I'm glad it seems helpful to everyone who needs it.
Thanks for looking. :) |
Thank you, You have helped me and others, it was so kind that you take pictures and posted them. I see now there are a lot of us who are visual people. By the way that is one awesome bag.
|
thanks for photos. i have the pattern and have bought the fabric to make one. just have gotten to it yet. maybe this weekend.
|
One thing I've been doing with my Totes, is : I sew the front pocket into the seam of the front top and bottom piece. (sewing all three pieces together at once) It makes it a nicer finish. Don't know if I am making this clear...
|
Thanks! I have the pattern, too. But I've been a bit intimidated.... Hopefully this will help!
|
Thank you for the pictorial tutorial.
I'm still stuck on the pocket. I've completed through Step 1D. I've read through the instructions but can't find when to attach the pocket to the bag. I thought it was attached in the seam when you sew the outer top to the outer bottom but the instructions don't say anything about that. In your photos it looks like you have it in Step 7D. I'm totally confused. |
Yup, the pattern has it at step 7. I am not sure why, but that's where they have it. I always put it on after I get the outer portions sewn and the fleece on them.
I think it is important to remember that patterns are like a recipe to make chilli. They all have the same basics, but you can put the ingredients in different order and still get chilli. :) |
So it's just top stitched on? Is that secure enough?

I keep hearing about the 'BOW TUCK BAG". What makes it different from other bag patterns? Is it easier to make? I don't see any offered from pattern co.'s. They are lovely and I would love to make one. Someone please bring me up to date on the BOW TUCK..
|
Thanks, will make lovely gifts for my grandaughters
|
Great tutorial. I am another visual learner that appreciates the time it took to do this. Thank you.

Am I missing something? Can you maybe guide me to a free one? I found a link to it that has free bags others might like. Thanks for this info. |
Thank you for posting this tutorial. I've wanted to make a Bow Tuck, but have been put off by the not-too-clear instructions, so have been hesitant to start one. This helps a lot!

There are so many free patterns and tutorials out there maybe you'll be lucky. If I see one on a site I will let you know. |
I have bookmarked your Tut on t he Bow Tuck Tote as I appreciate the visual aids.
It looks like you are using the PFF (Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece). Would your recommend using regular batting as a substitute? Or could that make it too bulky? |
