Not much of a tute, but I wanted this white fabric to be beige so I poured hot coffee into a bowl and soaked it for about a half hour.

I like it better than the tea dye method, I think it lasts longer (through washing) and stains darker.

Plus I love the coffee smell!!! :)

great idea, thanks for sharing

merry 08-26-2011 12:32 PM

Thanks for the idea. Looks good! Will try it. Tea dying took 3 or 4 times & then just looked dingy :(

Corky 08-26-2011 12:33 PM

And maybe it was just this particular fabric, but it looks great! I kept if fully submerged and used HOT coffee.

I always use coffee, I save what is left on the pot in the am for a few days when I know I am going to dye something.

suezq 08-26-2011 02:32 PM

Thanks for the tint hint!!!!

QuiltingGrannie 08-26-2011 06:09 PM

Thanks for the tip. I wondered if coffee would work like the tea dye, now I know!

Gramma B 08-26-2011 06:11 PM

Can always use good tips! Thanks for sharing!

DogHouseMom 08-26-2011 06:46 PM

I like!!

I played with "kitchen" dyes recently. I had tried tea, turmeric, curry, and a few others. No coffee in this house or I would have tried that as well. I like the results.

Corky 08-26-2011 10:05 PM

How did the turmeric and curry turn out?

Talk about putting some "spice" into our quilts!!

I too like to darker effect from the coffee compared to the tea.

plmsmith 08-27-2011 01:43 AM

Thanks for the hint and coffee is way better than tea to drink too

quilticing 08-27-2011 02:33 AM

I've found that even with a fixative, it will fade with each washing, especially with the excellent detergents on the market.

SingerSewer 08-27-2011 02:33 AM

A mix of tea and coffee makes a good combination for dyeing fabric too. I usually soak it for a few hours then after wringing it out well toss it in the dryer to set the color. Makes for a nice country blender!

didi 08-27-2011 03:24 AM

Thank You for taking pictures showing the difference,,,I've never done this and wanted to see how it looked beefore I tried it...

This is the way I have always done it only I mix up
a batch with instant coffee...gives control for
darker colors even...and smells so good.

psychonurse 08-27-2011 04:17 AM

I like it better dyed than the original.

annthreecats 08-27-2011 04:19 AM

So does this stay or wash out after several washings? How do you set the dye so that it does not come out?

teacherbailey 08-27-2011 04:51 AM

Great look! There's about 1/2 pot left every morning so if I save it for a couple of days and then heat it up in a big pot on the stove.....should be just about right. Then maybe I can simmer the fabric for awhile (like we used to do with Rit Dye way back in the day) and it will hold up to washing better? Hmmmm.....

Thank you for sharing this great tip!

This post reminded me of being about 14-15 years old. My Mom made all my clothes, they were absolutely beautiful and I loved everything she made me. She made a dress for a dance class final formal. It was white with white eyelet skirt. We decided that it should have been ivory or ecru colored after it was made, so Mom said we would "tea dye" it. Of course I'd never heard of that. Next thing I knew she was making coffee and dunking my beautiful dress in it. She said the coffee would do a better job for what we wanted. She was right! I loved that dress!!

AprilG 08-27-2011 06:02 AM

I love using coffee and tea to "antique" my fabrics for the porcelain dolls I make. Well, their clothes any way. I also use the coffee method to dye the cloth bodies on my ethnic dolls.

adyldrop 08-27-2011 06:04 AM

Thanks I love this!! I actually got some instant so I could do this on some bowl stuffies I wanted to make...I should try that soon lol

Wash in cold water and salt for the first wash. Always use cold water and the coffee color lasts longer. I use this method to "antique" fabrics for the porcelain dolls I make and dress. Works great.

SewExtremeSeams 08-27-2011 06:24 AM

Thanks!

Val in IN 08-27-2011 06:38 AM

Wow, it looks great! I need to give this a try. How strong did you make the coffee?

KarenR 08-27-2011 06:42 AM

Did you have to wash the fabric to get out all of the finishes before doing this?
Please share!

vickimc 08-27-2011 06:47 AM

looks great. now soak it it white vineger. you could have added the vineger when dying. the vineger helps set the die and it wont fade nearly as bad.

pawebdoctor 08-27-2011 07:02 AM

Love the look of coffee stained fabric!!!

mimee4 08-27-2011 07:16 AM

Thank you for this. I need to tea/coffee dye some fabric.

Katts 14 08-27-2011 07:36 AM

Nice idea Thanks

Greeter Eva 08-27-2011 09:04 AM

I heard that Red Rose tea gives you a pinker shade than the other brands. Don't know but would be worth a try.

mariebaker 08-27-2011 09:18 AM

thanks for idea-I will try it w/ some old lace I am planning on using in a CQ-

chickadeee55 08-27-2011 09:23 AM

Corky, thank you for this tip. I used it today, I had some white fabric that was too white, so I used coffee to tone it down, worked perfect, turned out perfect color, now I am sewing the quilt together. Yeah!

New knee 08-27-2011 09:39 AM

You might like tea dyed fabric if you use a genertic brand of tea rather than a name brand because the color comes out a different hue--not so "reddish."
