Dancing with a star - a star-making-tut

I wanna show you how i make "a star". I hope, i find the right words for it, because i've learned english 20 years ago and never needed since then. Do you want to follow me to the skys? http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/v...edene/d050.gif

First: Take a look to your stash. You need yellow and orange for the star, and blue and purple for the "sky". And we need grid (correct word???) with 60°-triangels on it.

Okay, lets start :)

The first step is: We make (surprise surprise!) excentric log-cabins with yellow and blue strips. The yellows are the smaller strips, the blues are wider. We need six LGs, i made six equal pieces, but you can also make three pieces "so" and three "so" or you make six different LGs, maybe a rainbow or so...
Important is: The light side has small stripes, the dark side has wide stripes. Make it with measures from 3-4 inches (but all equal!)

Okay! Next step: Cutting the "grid" (and i do not know yet the right word http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/konfus/a015.gif ), we need six triangels. You can make it bigger or smaller than mine, it will be your own star. One edge lack of the triangles. These "middle-hole" prevents, that six seams meet on one point and make a "bubble". We close the hole later with a little trick. http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/frech/e025.gif

And now its time for a first "layout": Play with your log-cabins on the grid. The yellow side to the middle or to the border? The LGs near the center or near the border? Its your decision, its your own star!

I like the second one. http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/froehlich/k025.gif So i can make the first (inner) "rays" of the star. First the orange part, then the yellow (i hope, you can see it on the photo). The fabric must cover the grid.

Now we need a little bit dark sky, so that your star can twinkle! And, because our star is very tiny, we need more rays for it!

The yellow triangles are not sewing yet, we close the open seam to the dark blue later, okay?

Now we make the outer rays "brighter" with an orange strip and close the sky with a darkblue triangle. In the first Photo you can see this...

And a layout again...

That's the moment for sewing togehter the singele rays. Pay attention to the open seams between outer ray and blue fabric.

Ready? Okay! Then we close the inner hole now!:thumbup:

I take a little scrap dark blue, a little scrap of the grid...

Cut your grid in to a little regular star, sew it on the right side of fabric, cut it out, cut the edges and make a little cut in the middle of the grid (only the grid, not the fabric)! And then turn over through the cut in the grid... (can you understand my terrible english? http://www.smilies.4-user.de/include...ie_tra_039.gif )

And now again: a little layout-play: put the little star to cover the hole. Hm... edges to edges? Or edges to ray-middleline? its your decision!

Ready? Okay! Now we close the open seams... with (surprise surprise) strips! http://www.smilies.4-user.de/include..._happy_330.gif and casually ww will cover the uncorrect points of the inner ray...

For the points i make orange diamonds on the same way like the inner little blue star. Sewing grid-diamond on the right side of fabric, cutting the edges, turning over through a cut in the grid. Okay? Okay!

For the seam-cover stripes you can take bias tape.

So! The top is ready! Now the star need a backside... When else do you have the opportunities to see the backside of a star... http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/c032.gif

We need a big piece of fabric (or four smaller pieces). Cut it so:

Between the small pieces you sew your label.

Then you sew the strip to the bigger pieces. Pay attention for a little window to turn over!
(do NOT pay attention for the strange light on the photo. it was a deep dark night! :o)

Now we make a sandwich (its time for meal??? :eek: )
We trim the top (Pic 1)and stitch the batting on it (Pic 2). My batting has a clue-side, i make it NOT to the top! Now we trimm the batting (Pic 3)and arrange the Top (with the right side) on the backside-fabric (also the right side) (Pic 4/5).

Now sew top and backside together, trim the backside, cut the edges and turn over through the window in the backside...

Now we make the last steps: Iron your top! (when you used a batting with clue, it will to be clued on the backside). Remove the threads from the stitching. Make a quilting, as you like it (i like a pure one).

And now in fact, your star is ready! Really? My star is far from beeing ready!

Okay, the first mistake: the letters LGs means LCs (=log-cabins).

The second: in Post 13 means we will...
