Few years back I needed to do binding on a scalloped edge. After 3 years of delay I finally came across some great directions. Google Linda Franz. I followed the directions precisely and had great results. The best part was how she applied the binding. She makes really long strips but doesnt piece them together until she comes close to the end of the strip. Then you can see where the seam is going to land. If its in a valley you can adjust the length of the remaining strip so you can control where the seam ends up then you add the next long strip. If you look at her detailed instructions you will see what I mean.

I think I googled her instructions before Linda...maybe. I did look at some instructions which were very detailed and hilarious! I think it said something about buying valium or drinking wine or something along those lines...great instructions too!

I am finally going to do my scallops and my search has led me to your post. I love how your scallops look.
What is the width of the strip you sewed onto the quilt edges prior to marking your scallops?

Very nice details - if I ever tried another one - thank you. I did ALL mine on my Dear Jane by hand - not the easiest thing to do !

I seem to be the only person reading this that is not quite getting it.

A couple of questions -

How do I do this?

"You will want to put the binding on the underside of the quilt as you sew and use your walking foot if you have one. . . .

Then you will flip the binding over to the back and hand sew it with a ladder stitch.."

I seem to have missed something here. Did you machine sew the binding to the front of the quilt and then turn it to the back and hand stitch the fold of the binding to the back?

Beautiful quilt. I wonder what Mrs. Jane A. Stickle would think of all the quilts inspired by her work?

Bearisgray........ Great observation.....I went back, yup you are right-and no one caught it, leave it to you! Then I looked at post #5 pic...looks like she is sewing with front of quilt UP, attaching the binding by machine, then will flip under and hand sew the other edge to back. So I think just a directional error. Great way to finish a DJ...hers is great looking. Wonder if she's still active on board?

I have no desire to do scallops, but just wanted to say how beautiful and amazing your finished quilt is! Wow.
