I made these using 5" squares. First make your 4 patches using 2 lights and 2 darks. Then measure out 1 1/2" from the center seam and cut. Rotate your block and do this until all 4 sides have been cut. Then take the center little block you have just cut from each side and turn them around. Then sew your block back together. I hope everyone can understand this! Its my first tutorial.

I have a friend that used the five inch blocks and did her cut one inch from the seam. I think I like the one and a half inch better.

colleen1978 07-22-2010 05:05 AM

This looks fun...I will try it! Thanks :)

lisainmo 07-22-2010 05:05 AM

Looks fun..thanks for sharing another bookmark for me :)

pal 07-22-2010 05:09 AM

My friend, Roz, made this block following your Tute, and brought it to our summer breakfast show and tell. The block is gorgeous "in person". We're all going to make it now.

You did a wonderful job on the tutorial.

ginnie6 07-22-2010 05:09 AM

the lady who taught me said that you could use different size blocks to make the 4p just adjust your cut to whatever....maybe on a 6" block do a 2" cut? I think its something you could play around with a lot! Oh and thanks ya'll!

sueisallaboutquilts 07-22-2010 05:10 AM

I just got 2 fabulous fabrics from Jinny Beyer's Outback collection. I'm going to get moving on it :D Love the way you get the 4 patch in the middle after you cut.
Thanks again!!!

wvdek 07-22-2010 05:29 AM

Another possibility! How abot that.

newbee 07-22-2010 05:34 AM

Wow, that looks like fun! I can't wait to try it. I haven't done a disappearing 9-patch yet, and I may try this first. Thanks!!

Swan Song 07-22-2010 05:49 AM

We have been playing around with this block in our 9P project. It turns out beautifully no matter the fabric. I have links to the blocks being made on our activities page-

http://www.quiltingboard.com/group_a...jsp?gracnum=59

I think Dagny did this with a 9P for one of her tops. I know GrammaNancy has some examples with her blocks, also quilt queen 2 did some and I did some in flannel. I wish I had somemore of that flannel would have made a great guy's quilt.

quilter64779 07-22-2010 05:55 AM

I am going to buy a neutral color and I have a load of 5" squares. See if I cam find 2 alike then make more of different colors for a real scrappy quilt.

MeMeX8 07-22-2010 06:19 AM

We did this block at our guild meeting. When you lay it out, there is a secondary design that pops out. Very nice design. Depending on the fabric selections, it can be very graphic/contempory. Hope you all try it.

Oh wow! that is really neat with the 9p! I need to look over those tutes though and see how its done....this one was easy cause there was one main seam to cut around...having a hard time figuring out how to do it with a 9p.

I just whipped one up to figure it out because my brain isn't functioning this early in the am (well I did wake up at 4 am -its 7:36 now). Whatever size block you start with it will reduce it by an inch. I used 3 inch squares so I started out with a 5 1/2 inch 4 patch when done I had a 4 1/2 inch disappearing 4 patch. However I should have cut the center block smaller. It's definitely a block to play with.

Shirlx 07-22-2010 11:17 AM

Anna O 07-22-2010 04:20 PM

I've done that. Send me your email on a PM and I'll send it to you.

dellareya 07-22-2010 04:58 PM
