Fabric Boxes with French Seams Tutorial

2 Attachment(s)
My tutorial shows you how to make French Seams when constructing a Fabric Box as first shown to us on http://seaside-stitches.blogspot.com...-tutorial.html.

First you make your quilted square what ever size you want. My example is a 15" square. Determine which side you want to be the inside of the box and which will be the outside. Fold your square in half, the inside facing each other. Example corner is marked at 3" (this turned out to be quite a tall box).

Next, stitch your marked line. Now draw a line on your fabric 1/4" from the stitched line. I found this worked best since you are working with bulk here. Cut your fabric in between your drawn line and your stitched line... it will leave about 1/8" past your stitched line.

Sew your other corner and then, fold your square and sew the remaining two corners. Whew! Bear with me, it works.

Now, turn your square wrong side out!

OK, run your finger along what is your inside fabric seam to kinda of backward finger press that seam open. Pin your seams and sew 1/4" seams.

Since your seam allowance is cut at 1/8", you essentially are encasing it within the 1/4" seam you are now sewing. Be sure to back stitch a few stitches at the beginning and ending of this seam.

Turn box right side out and fold down your corners. Rather than stitching through all of the layers (my arthritis complains when I do this) I simply tack down the corners under the tip of the corner and then sew on my deco on the outside.

How cool. Thanks for the tute, I will try this on the next ones I do.

Nice tutorial!

LavenderBlue 12-02-2013 03:59 PM

Thank you so very much!!

thimblebug6000 12-02-2013 04:14 PM

Haven't made any of these yet, but think I'll use your technique when I do, thanks!

Pinkiris 12-02-2013 04:35 PM

Nice fabric box and GREAT tutorial! Thanks for doing this for us.

raksmum 12-02-2013 08:59 PM

Thank you so much! I have made several and only completed 4 of them because I hated handstitching those corners down. Will now finish the rest using your method. Will be way faster!

QuiltnNan 12-03-2013 04:10 AM

thank you for taking the time to post your tut

piepatch 12-03-2013 04:25 AM

Thanks for the fabric box tutorial!

callen 12-03-2013 04:27 AM

Wow, really like your tutorial & that size box looks like it would be perfect to hold a bottle of wine (just from the looks of your pictures).

btiny36 12-03-2013 04:34 AM

Thanks, really like your tutorial and Callen you are right it does look like it would hold a wine bottle....

azwendyg 12-03-2013 05:05 AM

Thanks for the tute! I need to make some fabric boxes to fit on a new shelf and I like the way the french seams add a little more "structure" to the box.

newestnana 12-03-2013 05:28 AM

Excellent tutorial! I've made one without the French seams but this is neater.

#1piecemaker 12-03-2013 06:15 AM

Nice tutorial!! I'll have to give it a whirl!

judylg 12-03-2013 06:15 AM

What a nice little pattern, I am going to put this on my to do list first. It would be great for a bottle of wine. And although it would be nice in Christmas colors think I would pick something that would fit all year long!! Thank you for sharing, that is really good.

fangman 12-03-2013 07:33 AM

That's so great.

llong0233 12-03-2013 08:27 AM

Well done! I followed this without any questions and I believe I can do this now without even viewing your tutorial again...that's how well you explained the process. Thanks so much as this will make my next two boxes extra special!

mjhaess 12-03-2013 10:15 AM

Love it...Thanks....

SewExtremeSeams 12-03-2013 11:09 AM

Thank you everyone for your kind comments.

I wanted to add that if I do another 15" square, I will probably make my corners smaller thereby making a shorter but fatter box. :D

Linda you did a great job! Now, just a thought, what do You do with the pieces you cut off????

Thank you, Jennifer!

Great question! Since they are green I am planning to raw edge applique them to a background in the form of a Christmas tree. I may then decorate it and send it to my Mom.

diamondee 12-03-2013 06:54 PM

I love it! Could you sew the cut off sections together and make a pointed top for the box?

Pilgrim 12-03-2013 09:20 PM

I took several to my guild's show and tell tonight. They were really loved. Several people asked to see them and how to do it. Great tutorial.

Diamondee, You probably could or you could leave the tips of the corners up instead of tacking them down. Just about anything is possible.

Pilgrim, WoW, pretty cool.

I love the french seams and I can tell the box would hold it's shape better then the other way I have done them! Great tutorial!

My thought with the left over corner it would make a great top/lid for a pocket on a outside purse gosh it is already quilted.

AnnT 12-04-2013 05:34 AM

That's awesome. I love the way it looks. Definitely going to try this. Thanks for sharing!

gramquilter2 12-04-2013 07:14 AM

Great tutorial, love your box.

bibi 12-04-2013 08:39 AM

Thanks for the great tutorial. I am going to try this with my next box. So far I have really enjoyed making these boxes courtesy of this awesome board's tutorials and pictures.

Thank you. Note on standing up. On my example I used 1/4" polyester batting... it is too thin and does not stand up well. It might be strong enough for a shorter box. That is why my batting of choice currently is warm and natural. However, I do plan to experiment with others.

ppquilter 12-04-2013 09:33 AM

Looks great and reduces bulk inside.

wordpaintervs 12-04-2013 10:24 AM

I made a few fabric boxes before doing this and now will be excited to try out this one. How pretty to sit a tall vase inside or fat candle, silk flowers, etc. Gosh...the list goes on and on...gee...even little undies or such for the 18 inch AG dolls would look cute on the shelf in this fabric box. Maybe ponytail decorative things. etc etc etc

Thanks so much for this idea. gotta try it.

hugs to you and yours

Vickey S.

Looks great! Thanks for the tute!

GeeGee 12-04-2013 09:36 PM

Nice tutorial. I have made soft boxes where I cut the shape before turning and quilting, then all I had to do was stitch the edges together. Since I like hand sewing, I stitched them by hand and there was no bulk on inside or outside. I don't have a camera so I can't show a picture.

maryellen2u 12-04-2013 11:18 PM

I have my fat quarters and scraps picked out to make several of these boxes for Christmas gifts. I am just not sure what size to cut the squares. I don't want tall and skinny boxes. I want good square proportioned boxes. Your French seems will give them nice structure. Thanks a bunch for your great tutorial!
