Dragonquilter, I've tried this pattern 2X and STILL haven't gotten it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Very frustrating! My folds don't look like the ones in the photos. I understand the "weaving" effect but they don't seem to braid (or whatever). Is there any thing you can think of that most "dummies" (like me) do most often that is incorrect? Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks Sandy Goshorn :)

Hi, Sandy
I am not sure I can help you any more that the pictures.
Try drawing the fold lines on your background. You need to draw a + and an X.
I lined up my fabrics on my cutting board in order to have the spacing even on each stack.
Sew from the center out along the center of this first stack.
Fold one side over on top of the other.
Place the next stack on the next line and sew again.
Repeat this all the way around for 8 stacks, folding the previous ones out of the way.
Once they are all sewn, take 2 adjacent stacks and fold them away from each other.
For the first (center most) petal, fold under twice and lay flat in middle. Now repeat for the other side.
For the second and all the rest, fold under once and lay flat in middle and then one on the other side.
Keep alternating sides.
Repeat these steps all around.
I hand stitched with big basting stitches to hold in place before adding the next layer.

How do I finish it once the dahlia is done?

Nelco 07-07-2012 06:02 PM

Wow! thanks. I will have to try that.

GwenH 07-08-2012 06:48 PM

lizzy 08-12-2012 12:43 PM

It's beautiful and thanks for taking the time to share this method with us.

Kttyhwk4 08-12-2012 08:00 PM

Wow this is a beautiful block....now to get up the courage to try it. I'm still new to quilting.

DOTTYMO 08-12-2012 10:13 PM

Being hopeless at any language even my own English I do appreciate the time and effort you took to do one in English.
Thank you.

Diane007 08-13-2012 03:26 AM

thank you for taking the time to do this .

kandee 08-13-2012 07:09 AM

My guild had a " challenge quilt " using a specific fabric. It was striped with several blues and white. I made this and it came out well.

maggy 08-14-2012 05:25 PM

This is beautiful and I like the technique. What size is the block when finished? Thanks for the instructions.

Ladibug 09-11-2012 08:09 PM

This has got to be one of the most prettiest things I have ever seen. I copied and it is in my bucket list to do when I get good enough. Thanks so very much for posting this.

The folded dahlia fascinates me to no end! I love your reds. Thank you for the tutorial. It is so easy to understand. Y

Hi Dungeonquilter, I know this is an old tutorial But I wonder if you could explain how to finish the folded Dahlia after the folding is done. The raw edges are exposed what do you do with them? Thank you for your time. peterparley

batikmystique 10-28-2012 02:32 PM

This is just so cool! I really want to do one of these to hang in my quilting room. Now, just to pick the fabrics...ohhh, where do I begin? LOL :-)

dungeonquilter 10-29-2012 12:16 PM

I just added borders that hid all the raw edges. I did not take a picture of it once it was finished. Gave it away as a gift, so can't take one now.

Your Dahlia is gorgeous and thank you so much for the instructions. I would like to try this once I get better at quilting. It's so unique.

Many thanks to you for showing us all the steps with pictures. I will definitely try to make one in the new year. Right now, I have too many Christmas projects I have to complete. Thanks again!

Beautiful. I made mine isinglass 21/2inch stripes. Could use jelly roll. I found it very easy to fold even though small
Can you see the mistake. It's staying

nygal 11-22-2012 05:41 AM

Wow that is beautiful and I love the color of your fabrics. Thank you for teaching us how to do this.

OK here's my pix of the FOLDED DAHLIA & the 2 FOLDED STARS I did...I ran short of fabric in the star and had to reverse the order of the red & the print...this arrangement did not highlight the star shape as in the other.

The 2 stars I did a pillow turn as I hate doing binding & attached a ribbon to hang. Did the same on the dahlia but am not happy how my circle turned out...still trying to decide what to do with it.

I made the folded stars years ago. I put them in wooden hoops when done and hung them up. I really am talking about over 25 yrs. ago. I enjoyed folding the fabrics etc.

I don't see a mistake. Looks great! I think I need to do some more of these.

New tutorial from Moda

http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/09/...ot-holder.html
Just came across this.

Pam1111 12-09-2012 06:20 PM

Earlier in this thread a poster said she was going to try and do the Dahlia/star pattern with 3x6 rectangles. The original post was for 6x6 squares and it was very bulky. I made one today and it came out so much lighter with 3x6 vs. 6x6 squares.

kathymarie 12-11-2012 07:32 AM

In nature dahlias ARE puffy.....great tute...much better than original folded stars we did years ago.

lovngrandma 01-18-2013 10:31 PM

wow, I think they did a really good job making the middle look nicer than in the original. From everyone's pics it seemed impossible to make the middle symmetrical, but this is a very nice adaptation! (although the instructions are not nearly as easy to follow as those in your tutorial, dungeonquilter!)

carolaug 01-19-2013 03:55 AM

did you or any one make a quilt using this block?
