This is really good!! I think I had better get out a pile of "not so great fabrics" and give it a try. How pretty. Thanks!

fidgety 05-05-2011 07:49 AM

Ok so now i have a new project to try this afternoon.... lol... love this design!!!!

AngieS 05-05-2011 08:20 AM

This is SO AWESOME! I would love to try one of these. :)

labtechkty 05-05-2011 08:43 AM

Just finished my dahlia!!! Wow super easy.

[quote=0tis]Thanks for the tute - I am making one right now - its really cute but it is very bulky - I think I am going to make it into a throw pillow - but I think it might be a weapon as heavy as it is. Doesn't matter though because its so darn cute. :)[/quote

I made one this way, found it bulky, so the second I made I just used 3inch sections instead of folding worked out great..going to make a quilt I think....

Terricat 05-05-2011 08:51 AM

OK, got it. Thank you for the alert on that point.

instead of the 6 inch squares, you used a 3 inch square. "Instead of folding" I don't quite understand. How close did you stack the fabric? The tutorial says 1/2 inch. Do you have a picture of your block? Otis is working on it also.

A quilt with this block will be gorgeous.........if we can get the bulk down a bit.

Thanks

The original directions called for a 6 inch square folded. This gives you a 3 inch strip, so instead of folding the six inch block and having the extra fabric I just started out with a 3 inch strip and lay them and fold them the same way. It's not as bulky and it lays better...I was also thinking about pressing as I fold but haven't tried that yet...if this works like I hope it will then I think it would make a fantastic block...( I hope that makes sense??) I will try and send a pict.....

made with 3 inch strips

BATIKQLTR 05-05-2011 06:04 PM

sooooo, the strips would be 3 x 6 (wide) & still 1/2 inch apart. I can see how this would work. Thanks!!

your purple/aqua is very pretty together. Beautiful block. I hope to get a chance to try this tomorrow. Will let you all know........

nanajojo713 05-06-2011 05:20 PM

THis block is beautiful,,, I hope I can do this..Thank you for making it look so easy...

fidgety 05-06-2011 06:00 PM

ok I get the 3 inch strip but....do you have to fold that strip in half as well in order to not have raw adges showing????

No, you don't have to fold the strip, once you lay your fabrics down on your background you would fold in the same order as the original..the raw edges are covered up...basically youre getting rid of the extra layer of fabric...

Rainbow 05-07-2011 07:19 AM

Could you please go through the ENTIRE process again...with pictures.

it would be the same as in the beginning of this tut. Only the strip measurement will change to 3 x 6.

3 top-to-bottom...or 3 side-to-side?

labtechkty 05-07-2011 03:52 PM

Go back to page one, dungeonquilter put a wonderful tutorial together on how to do this.. :)

Ok so, if you go back to the first page of this post you would only have to cut the piecees 3 inched by 6 inches. Fold them in half, ( Long ways ) press and then open that back up. continue the same for the rest of the process.

Quiltlove 05-12-2011 04:08 AM

What a marvelous tutorial. Thank you. I was curious as to whether it would be a good idea to stitch all of those folds in place? The only point of securing them looks like a pin when they are all done? Thanks.

calla 05-12-2011 08:54 AM

WOW THAT IS JUST SO BEAUTIFUL.........THANKS....calla

fidgety 05-12-2011 10:50 AM

i did go back and stitch down the folds after I was done as they kept wanting to pop out of their place

redturtle 05-12-2011 01:05 PM

thnx for the answers on how far apart the fabrics in the stack are laid...
i was in a hurry to take something with me camping so i just placed them 3/4" apart...it was definitely too much...altho i did come out with something kinda neat so i may yet finish it and keep it altho i do really want a folded dahlia lol

so maybe i will try again with the 3" x 6" blocks...we will see what comes

Quiltlove 05-12-2011 02:00 PM

I still don't understand the concept of using fabrics cut 3 x 6 inches. You would still be dealing with right side vs wrong side when folding back the pieces?

If you place the fabrics right side up they will fold over correctly...

bebe 05-13-2011 12:32 PM

cargeo 05-14-2011 03:56 AM

Thnx so much for the tut ..

Carol Wilson 05-18-2011 05:17 PM

Please what do you mean by folding the 3 inch by 6 inch longways pressing and then "opening up".

When I sew all 7 pieces together on the backing are the strips (6 x 3) folded or are they flat pieces of fabric?

At the very beginning of this post the very kind lady that had put it together said to take a 6" square and fold it in half , which leaves you with a 3x6 inch folded strip and press...All I did was take the six inch square and cut it in half. It eliminates the extra bulk of material that you are left with...you would then follow the rest of the tutorial as she explains it...

After you press your strip in half, you would then open it up and lay them on your backgrond fabric...

Thankyou, the penny has finally dropped, I must have been having a "Senior Moment", the fold is then used as a guide to the center of the fabric which you then align to the fold in the base fabric.

I was thinking you folded it the other way, that is why I could not understand why you would fold it and then open it up.

I am giving a tutorial on how to make the folded Dahlia next Wednesday so I had better look like I know what I am doing.

Many Many Thanks.
