I saw this on Oregon Public Broadcasting...Very simple to make! People wrote me and asked for a tutorial....in one hour I had it made -- Iincluding taking the pictures!!!

The original video said to use grosgrain ribbon. I only had regular ribbons on hand. I'm going to use fray-check on the ends to keep them from unraveling.

You can make any size box you want....and adjust the sides to what size suits you. I refolded my fat-quarters to make them fit nicely.

Enjoy!

Sew 1/4" around the sides leaving an opening for turning

Original video said to mark 2" in on all sides

Turn and press, topstitch 1/4" from edge

Cut 1/4" ribbons. Add 6" to each end of the box (if box is 8", cut ribbon 20")

The original box -- with fat quarters

Cut 2 pieces of fabric...any size you want -- this is 8" x 7" - original one was larger

Cut Iron-On fleece the same size

Pin the corners and double check what you have --- Because my box was small, I reduced the 2" to 1 1/2"

This is what the inside will look like

Pull up the corners and tie ribbons in a bow.

Lay the ribbon on the line you drew and stitch with decorative stitch. Sew from the topstitch line to the topstich line! I glued my ribbon down so it wouldn't slip on me.

Repeat for the other two ribbons

I have made these before and you did a great job on this. I have placed cardboard in the center to make the bottom firm too. I do this when I am using them in a drawer as a divider. Thanks!!!!

amandasgramma 10-23-2010 02:05 PM

Thanks, np3! That's a great idea about the cardboard. I've also thought about using the plastic canvas so they'd be washable!

quilts4fun 10-23-2010 02:07 PM

These are great. Thanks for taking the time to show us how to make them.

can just picture fresh baked breads in them as holiday gifts

DJ 10-23-2010 03:18 PM

Thank you so much! I want to make one for travelling that I can set out my vanity stuff in when at a motel or someone else's home, so it looks neat. I could just lay it flat in the bottom of my suitcase for travel.

Grammy o'5 10-23-2010 03:46 PM

I saw one someone (maybe you?) had made on the board and I have turned the internet upside down trying to find a tute. Thank you so much for posting this! I thought it would make a great Christmas gift for coworkers with cookies or candies in it. I'm so excited now!

Love your baskets. Thank you for the tutorial, your instructions were very easy to understand.

grandma Janice 10-24-2010 04:17 AM

thanks I will be making one out of Christmas material. Hugs

ka9sdn 10-24-2010 04:40 AM

Thanks for this. We saw them used a lot in Portugal when we were there this fall.

Scakes 10-24-2010 05:17 AM

Love the idea of putting fabric pieces in the basket. What a cute gift for sewing friends. I used to make these baskets a lot but put a handle on them. I like the look of it without the handle better I think and it will be quicker to make. LOL. I'm making some small items for a friend's fundraiser and I think I'll make a few of these for her too. Thanks for the pictures and tute. You did an excellent job.

mollymct 10-24-2010 05:23 AM

Oh cute!! I'd love to make some as gifts, but think I need a few first!! I love the ideas of using them for drawer dividers, for travel!(clever) and as bread baskets. Thanks for the tutorial!

ksea 10-24-2010 05:43 AM

I have made a few of these for gifts with a coffee mug, flavored instant coffee and some cookies in them. Then you just untie the basket and you have a little placemat/coffee mat to use.

sandpat 10-24-2010 05:49 AM

Thanks so much for the tute, it looks quick and easy!

A stupid question...how do you put the cardboard or plastic in the bottom? Between the fabs???? Duh...sorry I'm sooo dense.

lawsonmugs 10-24-2010 06:13 AM

Yes I was wondering how you put it in also. Very well done tute though . thanks alot.Mary

GrammaNancy 10-24-2010 11:11 AM

Cute little box. And a very easy to follow tutorial. Thank you

angelwatcher 10-24-2010 12:46 PM

Question, because the fabric pieces are not square, you used 8" x 7" pieces, what other sizes of fabric would you use to make them bigger or even smaller? And why aren't the fabric pieces square? Is there a reason for them being different?

Thanks for the beautiful tute, I'm such a visual learner, you've made it very easy.

Sewnique 10-24-2010 01:16 PM

Thank you for this tute! Do you think it would be possible to use the thinsulate stuff inside and use it to place a baking dish in? I was looking at your tute and had an idea that this would be good to fix for taking dishes to church functions.Or maybe making to give when you need a quick gift for someone.
