Hope this helps...I just learned after I used and re used a paper one someone sent me.(the last fold (pic4)) should be lined up,,it popped open when I took the pic

start with a circle(any size) I used a pizza pan

fold in half

fold in half again

and once more

line up ruler and cut from edge to edge

open up and there ya go!!! Make bigger or smaller by adding or subtracting from each side after you cut it...just use your ruler and cutter...

Thanks for that information. It seems simple enough - famous last words. That way, one could make several different sizes.

amma 10-30-2010 07:56 AM

I always tried doing it with a square. After I saw how simple the circle was I felt silly!

Bobbin along 10-30-2010 08:26 AM

Thanks so very much--every time I see one of your table toppers (that are always so beautiful,) I wonder how you do those so beautifully--and so fast!

Sew 'N Sew 10-31-2010 05:33 AM

Thank you for the tutorial, Riversong! I have an idea for an octagon table topper and have been puzzling in my mind for the last couple of weeks how to make the shape! So, very timely.

sunrise450 10-31-2010 07:02 AM

Thank you! This looks so easy, I was making it difficult when I tried to figure out how to do it.

mommamac 10-31-2010 07:08 AM

ssnare 10-31-2010 08:11 AM

Thank you.

Bobbinchick 10-31-2010 08:28 AM

I tried measuring each edge of the octogon and I couldn't get it to come out right. THis is a lot easier to do and the good thing is , you make it larger or smaller. I have a Santa done and I just have to quilt it and such. Now I gotta go find that fabric I have that has poinsetias on it and make another one. THanks for all you've done, Huiggies, Fay

Alondra 10-31-2010 09:22 AM

That's neat - thank you so much for posting that. It's one of those Why-didn't-I-think-of-that-myself? sort of things, and oh so handy to have. Thank you all for all the helpful things and comments you post every day!

ReeneeD 10-31-2010 01:22 PM

Thanks so much - I measured and almost went crazy last Xmas trying to get a perfect octagon. I finally bought a small one from JoAnn's and figured next time I could enlarge it but this is a lot easier.

Matilda 10-31-2010 04:09 PM

That is so good!! Thank you so much. I have been wanting to make a larger octagon shape and was trying to think how to do it. This is perfect. Thank you again.

LOL, my response exactly. In my mind, it was some obscure higher math function. Thank you so much. For this and all the lovely table toppers you have shared, and the tutorial!!! Hugs and smiles, wildlinda aka wildyard
PS: so many Linda's here, thought I'd go with my spades nickname. LOL
