This is how you can quilt as you go you want to quilts your blocks one at a time but leave a 1/4 all around your block for to sew on the other blocks now here two pictures showing my block i am going to join the 3rd is showing to trim all the edges around your block the 4th show that you take the backing and batting pin back so you can sew the front together 5th show how to pin the front together face to face the 6th show to put on machine sew 1/4 in all the way down now if you are hand piecing you will mark or have mark a line all the way to sew by hand leaving a 1/4 at each end the 7th show i lay my quilt down and cut the batting out on one side then the 8th show i lay the other side of batting down and some times you may have to trim it to lay flat the 9th show i lay the other side of the backing down the 10th show you i fold the other 1/8 in side of the backing down and pin 11th picture show that i took a needle and thread to sew i do it the applique way 12th one show the finish back the last picture show you the finish on both side of the front you also can do your broader the same way but always remember to leave a i/4 inches around your piece so you will have enough to sew on the other blocks

this is one i first start

how to pin the back and batting so they won't get in the way

too sew 1/4 all the way down if you are hand sewing leave 1/4 open at each end

showing how to cut one side or you can cut a little on both side you just got to get them to lay flat

it show how i lay the other side down

to lay one side of backing down

Thank you so much for posting these pictures, I learn from pictures so much better. I've just started my first QAYG project & didn't want sashing. This really helps. Any tips for adding a border.

QuiltingHaven 08-02-2011 08:55 AM

Oh, thank you so much. Now, I can handquilt in the recliner block by block and put them all together when I am done. Learning on a daily basis - I call it "LQBQB" Learning Quilting by the Quilt Board.

Thanks!

mountain deb 08-02-2011 09:29 AM

One of many methods, but I like yours.

nannyrick 08-02-2011 10:39 AM

Thank you. Great information.

oldcottontop 08-02-2011 10:42 AM

I use this method all the time. I find that if I use a small print for the backing you have to look really close to see the seams.

purrfectquilts 08-02-2011 11:01 AM

This is the way I do it most of the time unless making a reversible quilt. Thanks for the reminder and the pictures.

RobertaMarie 08-02-2011 11:27 AM

Rainbow 08-02-2011 12:16 PM

same way put you top and your batting and back quilt but leaving 1/4 all around then join of course you still measure as always to get your border right

jillnjo 08-02-2011 03:25 PM

Thanks!

Thanks, that is how I was planning to do it. I thought it should be more complicated. Just have to remember to leave at least 1/2 inch ( in my case) unquilted.

Elsie 08-02-2011 10:21 PM

momaholt 08-03-2011 02:28 AM

I always wondered about this method, sometimes I will read a western love book and their always taking their piecing with them where ever they go as well as quilting. I knew they were not carrying a quilt top in their basket.:)

norma Jean 08-03-2011 09:21 AM
