Just to let you know...this has been moved back to tutorials.

I did this without my walking foot...just a regular pressure foot. It is important though to check your tension! It may have to be adjusted. I found that the thread was too loose initially on the back side and the tension had to be adjusted.

Just to let you know it was moved back to tutorials. Hopefully you can figure out how to build up your walls. It's important that you lift the base on the left side of the needle and keep it up in that position the entire time you are sewing. You can't let it down or it will flatten on you and you'll lose your shape. I highly recommend the book by Susan Breier, "It's a Wrap" because her instructions are very clear and helpful as to how to make these.

Good job. You are a very talented lady. Thanks so much.

Thanks for the great tute! I have the book I just haven't done one yet. If I made coasters or placemats, do you think they could get washed?

I believe you can spot clean them but I wouldn't recommend washing them in the machine. I think they would lose their shape. The author does say that if spot cleaning doesn't work you can hand wash it in cool water with a gentle detergent and then rinse thoroughly. Air-dry after reshaping. Also, avoid placing the fabric projects in sunlight because they will fade over time.

Great job making this tutorial. I loved your first little basket you did and hopefully I can get to this before long. Thank you for sharing!

mar32428 08-09-2011 08:58 AM

I started one but was not happy with the results and stuck it in a drawer. After seeing your tut, I realize what I did wrong. Didn't wrap my fabric close enuf or tight enuf. Also thought you had to wind all the rope before you started stitching into the shape you wanted. Thanks for the info. I'll get my starter out of the drawer and try again.

These baskets are really neat - but I was wondering if they are washable and how one would do it. Thanks.

Also, where did you find the little yellow buckets that you have on your peg board? I would love to have some.

Hi, I looked and looked for a record of where I got the pegboard and accessories and couldn't find it. Got online and think I found my source... wallpegboard.com Look at the site and find a tab for accessories and you'll see something similar. The pegboard looks like mine (white plastic) but the yellow containers are different in shape. Don't know if they even carry the shape that I have, but it does look like it would function the same. There may be other sites to check as well. Hope this helps! Karen

You can spot clean them with gentle detergent. If they really need cleaning, the author states you can wash them by hand (not machine), rinse well, and before you let them air dry reshape them. Because this is raw-edged finished washing vigorously is just not a good idea.

peabee 08-09-2011 04:47 PM

bookmarked!

thanks again for the tute! i'd given up on my first try. you've encouraged me to keep going, or just use it for a hot pad as is.

btw, is the turquoise blue fabric you used to coil by any chance the cheetah girl fabric? since my daughter is past that phase, i used a similar looking fabric to start my coil basket

I have no idea...I got all this fabric this past week at WalMart. Since I had not done such a large basket I didn't want to spend a lot of money on material (and I don't have much stash). I got this mainly because I thought all the colors went so well together! Good luck on giving it a try again...I think it's worth the effort. Just take your time!

Holba 08-09-2011 06:20 PM

Thanks!! I think these are becomng more popular - I saw 2 kinds of cording in my LQS last weekend! Your basket is beautiful.

Thank you for the compliment. I'm glad the tutorial looks like it might be beneficial. I have found that making these baskets has unleashed a new side of being creative for me...labor intensive but fun! Hope it will be the same for you.

It should all be there. There are other people's comments interspersed throughout the tutorial so you have to go through each page posted to follow it all. It finishes up with the final picture of the basket that I made.

I just checked...the tutorial starts on page one and goes through page 3.

dgmoby 08-21-2011 05:54 AM

Thank you for the wonderful, detailed tutorial! I love tuts with the pictures and steps documented under them. It helps to make each step very clear and shows you what you may have misinterpreted in the instructions. You do a wonderful tutorial...and your basket is just lovely! I think I might can do this :)

pdunn56 11-24-2011 09:02 PM

fantastic tute thank you , can't wait to try it!

homecaregiver 11-27-2011 11:09 AM

I saw this done at a quilt show in Lincoln NE in October and I had a one on one lesson with the lady that was doing it.
She had some beautiful items she had made. I purchased the cord from her and a few other tidbits. I can not wait to try it myself but I have been away from home for a while and have to wait till I get back home.
Thanks for the great tute.
Pat
