I made a baby quilt with a satin scalloped border, and several people have asked how I did it. This is my first post for a tutorial. I hope you will be able to understand my directions.
First,I cut strips of blanket binding into 6 inch strips. I alternated pink and white. Then I sewed, with a basting stitch on my machine, two semi circles close together (about 1/8th of an inch apart) This must be done with a basting stitch, or it could be done by hand. Note the fold of the binding is away from the semi circles. I sewed this with contrasting thread so that, hopefully, it will show up in the pictures. But ordinarily I would use thread the same color as my fabric. Here I pulled the top two threads to create a gather to the center. This is repeated on the other side. Here both sides have been gathered. I used pins to wind the top threads around so they would stay in place until I could stitch them with my machine. Here I have used a zig-zag stitch to hold the gathers in place. I trimmed off the "tails". and Now it is ready to be attached to your border like you would a prairie point. Finished border! Finished quilt. :o) |

This is the type of post that makes the Quilting Board a wonderful place to browse. Thank you very much for posting this. I had an idea for a project pop into my head immediately as I read your post.
That is such a sweet look! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much. What a cute idea. I don't make too many baby quilts anymore but it may come in handy for something else
Wow, I don't think I could ever do that. That is beautiful and so appropriate for a baby.
Okay, this may be a crazy question, but how do you get the finished edge (on the quilt) at the top of the scallop? Is the trim sandwiched between the quilt top and the backing?
Yes. The scallops are attached before the final binding is put on.
I tried to find a tute on the internet on attaching prairie points. Here's the best I can come up with: http://www.hgtv.com/crafting/ask-ale...ers/index.html Maybe someone on this board can post a tutorial on attaching prairie points, or your LQS can help you. |
Brilliant idea. A quilters version of the tag blankies that are so popular. Thanks for sharing! Lesa
Wow.Great tute and you really make it sound do-able. Great technique. Thanks
Thank you. The quilt and boarder are beautiful.
thank you
So nice and it would look nice on "big girl" quilts too...
Thanks. That is the most adorable quilt. The scallops really set it off.Love it!
That was a great tut and the quilt came out beautiful mostly because of the border in my opinion.
Cute idea and good tutorial!
Just signed up for Message Board. I love the border. I will be using it on my great-granddaughter's pink and white quilt (she is not a baby, but 7 years old, but she will love it). Thanks for showing us how, and instructions were very easy to understand.
Just adorable and you make it look so easy!
Thanks for the tutorial. Your quilt is beautiful.
Oh that is beautiful.. thank you for showing us.. I'm bookmarking to read again!
Great instructions I think I will try this on a baby quilt I am working on. Thanks
My friend just finished a baby quilt for a new granddaughter. It was one with 3-d pinwheels. I wished she had seen this idea to make the pinwheels before she started her quilt. I think babies would really love the feel of the satin. I bookmarked this idea to use at a later date. I make a baby quilt each month to be given at my quild meeting for charity. Won't they be surprised if I make one like this? Thanks for the tutorial. It was easy to understand and the pictures were right on.

I wonder how minky would work in this same application. Any one used minky? I have some bought for a backing of a baby quilt but was told it would be too stretchy to try to quilt on a home machine. Any one have any suggestions?
Perhaps I'm missing something here, but is the circle turned
in before making the gathering? I've looked at this more than once and can't see it. I know my kids, and grands would and have pulled the edges so it raveled if possible, even sucking on their blankie when very young. |
Thank you for the help...I get it now!
Beautiful and thank you for the great instructions, I have never seen this done before and it is just awesome.

You did a great job of explaining. I could sit down and do as you did, and it would be just like yours! It sure adds a delicate look to the quilt. Nice job!
