Izy's way of doing freezer paper applique!

1 Attachment(s)
My friend Hilary, (CoventryUK) requested a tute on how I do my applique using freezer paper! This is a quick, easy way to do 'functional' applique, such as on kid's quilts where it will be laundered a lot etc. :)

Sewfine 10-24-2013 09:11 AM

I like this way. Thanks for sharing.

QuiltnNan 10-24-2013 11:44 AM

I saved this to remind myself how you use freezer paper. I will try this method when I do an applique project.

Blue Bell 10-24-2013 05:13 PM

Thanks for your wonderful tutorial.

SewExtremeSeams 10-24-2013 06:04 PM

Thanks. That is a great way to do it.

bibi 10-25-2013 04:12 AM

Thank you so much.

LavenderBlue 10-25-2013 04:53 AM

Wonderful! I've always wondered why applique is not stitched down in this way....seems like a quicker and stronger method.

I agree LavenderBlue, that said I love hand applique too and haven't tried hand stitching using this method, maybe I will have a go sometime and let you all know if it works! :)

Thanks for all your lovely compliments, I love to share! :D

mimi=17 10-25-2013 06:36 AM

Thanks for the Tut.

angelanicole 10-25-2013 06:57 AM

This method works very well to with hand stitching but for a kids quilt or a quilt that is washed often the
machine stitch is more durable.

Exactly Angelanicole ;D

Great tutorial. Thanks. This is how I do my applique but have always had trouble with getting those pesky little places like you did on the circle but your technique of the little ripples should do the trick.

Thanks Mimi, it's frustrating when you get the little points but this way it's easy to correct with out distorting the fabric, glad you like the tute! :)

wordpaintervs 10-25-2013 09:57 AM

kalady 10-25-2013 10:55 PM

very interesting what a good tut

BettyGee 10-26-2013 04:07 AM

Thank you so very much for making such a terrific tutorial. I've been doing needle turn and this looks much easier and should produce a clean applique. You are a special person to share your talent.

quiltingbuddy 10-26-2013 09:39 AM

So does this mean that your freezer paper acts as a stabilizer too? Looks like a good one-step sewing method. Thanks for sharing!

debbieoh 10-26-2013 10:26 AM

Thanks so much for sharing

Yarn or Fabric 10-27-2013 08:22 AM

Very nice way of doing it. Can I show it off to my guild members at an upcoming meeting? I'm always looking for things to demo at the meetings... :D

Psychomomquilter 10-28-2013 04:48 AM

oh my! and any other shapes too??!! going to try it..

golfer 11-01-2013 03:36 PM

Thank you very much. This will make it easier for me.

Yes, quiltingbuddy, just pin the applique to your background with a couple of pins to maintain the position. I have never had any puckering at all this way! :D

Of course you can, glad to share easier methods with all quilters Deb, let me know what they think! :D

You can do any shape, follow the usual techniques of snipping the seam allowance on into tight inner curves as you would in usual methods of applique to ensure a smooth edge. You may need to use a stiletto to protect your fingers from the iron on smaller pieces too. The key is having a hard surface to iron on, to get a nice clean sharp edge ;D

#1piecemaker 11-02-2013 04:15 AM

You make it look so easy! Great tute.

That's because it is 1piecemaker!

Diane007 11-02-2013 06:18 AM

thanks for sharing your circles look fantastic

Izy 11-02-2013 08:25 AM

Thanks Diane, have a try, it really isn't that difficult to get good looking circles this way! :)

Thanks!
It looks like I won't be needed a demo this month... someone else volunteered which makes me happy. I'm usually the one that does it every month so it will give me a break :D
I'm hoping to do it at the December or January meeting. I'll definitely let you know what they think about it :)

Izy 11-02-2013 10:51 AM

Fair enough Deb :)

debbieumphress 11-02-2013 05:54 PM

I just sat here and checked out your tute. Loved it. i do it this way too but loved the way you illustrated so it would be smoother around the edges....I hand stitch but agree the machine is the way to do for much used projects.

Thank you

Rhonda 11-02-2013 06:40 PM

Just found your tutorial Izy! You do an excellent job of showing the steps. I've always basted the edges but never tried using freezer paper. I might have to try this. It looks a bit easier. I don't much care for needle turn tho I can do it but this is much faster too than needle turn.

Quilting D 11-02-2013 06:59 PM

This looks wonderful and very doable! Thank you!
