Joseph's Coat

I was reading this thread and went and did a research for Georgia. I will do a small tut here to help her out.

http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...ml#post6207660

If you would like to try this quilt, go to the thread above and download the pdf that I uploaded.

Now here is the beginning of the block. I have never done this one before so I will post as I go along.

First, gather up all different fabrics or go to the link posted in the thread above to look at her quilt. Cut six wedges and six background.

I mark the centers of each one by just folding over and pressing a crease. There are three creases in the background and one crease for the middle of the wedges.

Pin the middle of one wedge to the middle of one background and pin through the 1/4 inch seam allowance at both ends.

Sew three wedge to one background, two wedges to 4 backgrounds and one wedge to one background (pics below).

I just set them together to see if they are ok. I will have to make at least three more blocks before deciding on the sewing together.

I will not square them off as I will leave them rounded at the edge.

Rosyhf 07-31-2013 06:01 PM

Sew with the concave on top. Since this is a bias, it should go together well. I used my purple Thang to pull the fabric over the convex. My background is a very lite tone with roses. I will use many colors as this Joseph's coat.

Beautiful block, and a well put together easy to follow tutorial, thanks!

SueDor 08-01-2013 01:47 AM

It's going to be beautiful!

BettyGee 08-01-2013 03:41 AM

Wow, that is amazing. You have made it very clear and I do believe it will be something for the future. As a SABLE quilter I need every idea I can find.

First what is a SABLE quilter? Second: this Joseph coat is fascinating me....went to a local quilt show recently and sat in on a presentation on something very similar to this but her pattern is based on a circle that is segmented with four melon shapes and she hand pieced the melons to the center in a row doing two on each center, joining, and going on.......anyway end result seems to be the same as this.....my question after this long statement is: where is your pattern for your tutorial, I could not find it in the reference sites offered?

jillnjo 08-01-2013 04:29 AM

So interesting! Will try this and thanks!

Geri- go to the pattern link that Rosy gives in the first post above and then scroll to post no. 17. There is a link there.

thanks - found the pattern and have printed it out....
Now my question to Rosyhf........the template pattern shows this block is then squared off with the corner curves..is that correct and then the now square blocks are joined together....whereas the hand quilted site--forgot the name just shows adding peels and centers along the way????? I see the templates are from EQ5-is that correct...I have that version..never thought to look there.......thanks all........love that this can be machine pieced.......hand piecing is not my fav thing to do, actually avoid it like the plague!!!!!

Geri B 08-01-2013 01:06 PM

another question.......I did print out some of the tutorial........I could not get it to print the pics....just the words.....why?????

Yes Geri, it is an EQ block. You can square the blocks but I prefer to just leave the edges round. I have another way of putting these together in my head. I will see if it's going to work.

meanmom 08-01-2013 07:06 PM

Oh my how did you know I needed a tutorial on this block. I just decided a couple of days ago to make this. I saw a wall hanging on pintrest with it and just need to make it. Thank you so much. I was going to figure it out myself and you have done all of the work for me. Thank you so much.

mjhaess 08-02-2013 08:57 AM

Thanks for the tutorial..that is very pretty....

I wasn’t going to work on this quilt too long as I had some other stuff planned. I figured if I made the block larger, I could just do enough blocks to show the process of putting the quilt together. I have a fair idea but won’t know until I try it lol.

So far I have enlarged the block to 18 inches and I love it!! In EQ, it gives you about 14 pieces that you don’t need. So I clicked on the delete button and then clicked on the patches and clicked delete on the keyboard and you can get rid of all the extra patches and just print the two that you need.
The first block came out ok. I say ok because I am not pleased with the way the points came out, but I will rip those a bit and fix later. In the meantime, I did another block and just did the middle petals, as I didn’t know yet how the set up will go.
I joined that block to the outside petal of the first block and then I could see that I could sew five petal on and just leave the one joining without. I will continue with two more blocks in a row, the same way.
Then on the second row, I will work that out when I come to it.
Here is a pic of the first large block, then with the second block and then the second block joined to the first and the extra petals added. I just layed them up there.

Rosy-

I love the look of this block and can't wait to try it! Sewing curves is something that I'm not very experienced at, so I'm thinking that the 18" version would be better for me to start with. May I ask how you enlarged it to that size?

Thanks for taking the time to post this tutorial for us. :)

Rosyhf 08-02-2013 08:24 PM

Pinkiris, I did it in EQ, If you don't have it, I will upload it for you.

I am happy to help. Here is the template for the 18 inch block.

make sure to put the "page scalling" to none.

Pinkiris 08-03-2013 01:27 PM

Thank you, Rosy!

I hope Karen doesn't mind but you might want to see a hand pieced and hand quilted version of Joseph's Coat. Yes, that's what I said ..... hand pieced and hand quilted!!! It's a real beauty!!! I think she is still a member of this board but am not sure. Go check out the photos.

Ok, I think I have it figured out. My quilt will have four blocks across and four blocks down. First row, Make the the complete blocks but leave the right petal off. When you join the blocks, the left side petal with fit into the right space.

Second row, make the middle of the block and two bottom petals, the two side and two top pieces will be left blank as they will fit to the top row and side blocks.

you can do this either way. Work each row and add the petals as needed. I will do the side next.

It seems that every Joseph's Coat that I have researched on the web, is hand pieced lol and they are all beautiful. I can't imagine how long it took to make one.

Personally I don't hand piece anything lol. I have several machines and I make good use of them as I want my quilts in at least two weeks or shorter lol.

The only handwork I do is, silk ribbon and crewel and beading and I totally love that part of hand work, so I can understand someone doing a quilt that way.

Barb Trost 08-03-2013 08:04 PM

Where is the pattern? Barb

Barb Trost 08-03-2013 08:38 PM

ok, found pattern above but it doesn't print out in full. Where are the no scaling found, checked everywhere, could it be called something else? Barb

I cut petals for hours last night and backgrounds this morning. I think I cut 150 petals. It seems that you sew this quilt as you go lol.

I made four block across. Now the second row, as you can see is totally different. You have to keep the circles going so half blocks are used also.

I make a center block only, put it on the board and then I can see what has to be added. I up loaded two blocks where you can see both ways you can do them. For instance, you can add the petals outside in the second block or add them in the third row. Here in the second row, the row begins with a half block, and three whole blocks, so far two are up .

I am going to finish all the blocks (16), put them on the board and then I will sew them together.

Geri, copy and paste the instruction into a word program, right click on the images and copy those separately and paste them into the work program.

Barb, click on the pdf, it will come up in your adobe reader. Click on file and then print. On that print page are little boxes with different things listed and one of them will say, custom scale or page scaling...uncheck that box if it is checked. There are only two pages in the file.

I have finished four blocks across and four down. I have left the separation between the blocks and the rows so you can see the parts.

I sewed three petals and three backgrounds for 1/2 of the block and then the other, then I sewed these two halves together. First I pinned the center and long stitched it and if it matched, then I would sew the entire seam with the usual stitch length.

First I made four complete bocks, row 1. Then I made only the center blocks for row two, except one block, where I forgot and put the bottom petals one but that works out for the third row, where I will omit the petals for that join.

The sides are half blocks. Since I was feeling my way with this quilt my pieces parts are all different lol. So if I were to make this quilt again. I would do the four complete block for row one. The center blocks for row 2 and the complete blocks for row 3 and again the center blocks for row 4. Then all you need are the half blocks for the sides.

I will now join the block and then the rows. I hope this helps anyone who wants to do this quilt. I wasn't going to spend much time on it but then I decided to work overtime (without pay lol) and finish it as I really love it. I might add more blocks as I see I still have some petal left, don't know yet.
