Wow that's some nice stitching!

matraina 08-03-2011 07:54 AM

You can also buy watercolor pencils at JoAnn's and Michaels.

So do these really wash out. I ask because I am working on one with a white on white back ground. I would hate for my line to stay in.

Farm Quilter 08-03-2011 08:46 AM

You do amazing work! Awesome

llindallovesllamas 08-03-2011 09:09 AM

Just beautiful! Will you adopt me? :)
Linda

DMcbaby 08-03-2011 09:59 AM

YOU ARE AMAZING!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TECHNIQUE FOR ALL TO SEE. i REALLY ENJOY HAND QUILTING BUT MY STITCHES ARE NOT NEARLY AS BEAUTIFUL AND NEAT AS YOURS. I MIGHT TRY YOUR METHOD. DOING ONE STITCH AT A TIME WAS WHAT I DID ON MY VERY FIRST QUEEN QUILT. IT TURNED OUT OKAY BUT YOURS IS SO MUCH BETTER. THANKS AGAIN FOR SHARING.

Diannia 08-03-2011 10:15 AM

Gorgeous work! Do you enter your creations in quilt shows? Do you sell your work?

The Quilter's Dream I tried once was "request". For the quilt on these pictures here I used Hobbs 80/20. I like the very traditional look of quilt and I prefer the low loft ones because they are much easier to hand quilt. For one of my coming projects I am going to use wool again - it's also great for hand quilting.

I have a brochure from Quilters dream, Request is the thinnest loft.......Now I am soooooooo impressed. Your stitches are the beauty. The thinnest batting would not be so impressive with out your skilled stitches. Thank you I will domy best to locate this batting.

Beautiful hand stitching, you were born to quilt!

sueisallaboutquilts 08-03-2011 11:03 AM

I am a hand quilter and am simply amazed that you do one stitch at a time- in my quilting life I've only known one other person to do it that way.
Your talent is absolutely fantastic! :D

OH-thanks for the great photos. You have inspired me to try a wholecloth. They are so beautiful.

Always love seeing your work

JCL in FL 08-03-2011 11:51 AM

You do lovely work and if a single stitch is what works for that is what you should do. I sometimes take single stitches but only when space makes me,or the fabric is thick near a seam. I'm not all that good doing it that way. Your way may take a long time but well worth the beauty you produce. Thanks for showing us.

Yes, I enter my quilts in shows. This year one of my quilts will be exhibited at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK (next weekend) and another one is entered in the World Quilt Show in Manchester, NH (August 18-21). I hope I can send quilts to more shows in the future, but the shipping overseas is so expensive (sigh....)
Normally I don't sell my work, but I have made several quilts in commission.

red-warrior 08-03-2011 12:42 PM

Beautiful work and thanks for all the information!

nannyrick 08-03-2011 01:04 PM

This is beautiful. I envy you. My hand sewing of anything leaves a lot to be desired.

meme peggy 08-03-2011 01:11 PM

I have watched the postings of your work with awe....I hand quilt but am in no way close to your work...thank you for the picture and the needle info...I am from Texas and go to Fla half of the time and hand quilting is my hobby, my favorite thing to do....much prefer to piecing the tops...do like to applique, but your work is amazing...thanks again...memepeggy

misoop 08-03-2011 01:32 PM

Sooooo, it is OK to make one stitch at a time!!! I can do that!! I just never could "load my needle" with more than 2-3. This makes me feel much better. Yours is just beautiful.

Petey 08-03-2011 01:32 PM

Are you ising your finger nail to push the needle?

droy57 08-03-2011 01:57 PM

Beautiful work how do you push the needle through? Do you use your fingernail?I get a hole in my finger every time i hand quilt.

megs0863 08-03-2011 02:14 PM

Your work is amazing.

carencake 08-03-2011 02:28 PM

amazing work. I too also hand piece and hand quilt my pieces. To mark darker fabrics one can use Conte pencils in the art department of michaels or Aron brothers. these are soft pencils you can hand sharpen and come in a wide variety of colors. Like a pastel marker and easily brush off or dampen with a cloth.

running1 08-03-2011 02:35 PM

Andrea, thank you for sharing your technique and your fabulous skills with us... You have inspired me (again) to keep on hand quilting. I am, like so many others, in absolute awe of your work. Mine will never look like that, but that's ok!! I LOVE handquilting and I can't imagine that you love it more than I do :-D ...
I'm fairly certain I speak for many of us when I ask you to keep posting pictures of your wonderful quilts!

ps.... I've only completed two (and a half) doll-size practice pieces and I'm getting a pretty decent callous on my "pushing" finger... not complaining mind you, just observing... Do I need to adjust my technique??

BobbiSue2009 08-03-2011 03:08 PM

Awesome work. I love the way you seem to just flow with the stitches.

Tinabug 08-03-2011 03:25 PM

Wow, I would love to have that precise stitching talent you have. Amazing work. I do hand embroidery and I do find that very relaxing. Thanks for sharing these photos.

chuckbere15 08-03-2011 03:30 PM

Wow, your work is beautiful.

Quilter54 08-03-2011 03:57 PM

Thank you so much. I will give it a try. And I definitely was interested. I printed out the pictures. Again thank you.

sewmorethings 08-03-2011 04:01 PM

That is amazing, tried to handquilt one time, didn't work too well, plan on trying it again one day.

Rock Lady 08-03-2011 04:36 PM

I love to hand quilt but I do have to have a thimble. Your quilting is so beautiful.

Winkee 08-03-2011 05:13 PM

What fabulous work!!

PatQuilts 08-03-2011 05:34 PM

Thank you, thank you for the tips. I'm just starting to handquilt and it is so helpful to hear what works for you. I'm another who struggles with even stitches -- especially on the top. Your work amazes me.

delma_paulk 08-03-2011 05:45 PM

Beautiful!

#1piecemaker 08-03-2011 05:54 PM

Beautiful work. I too am a handquilter. But, I use a thimble and my fingernails! My fingers have enough holes poked in them!!

carolynjo 08-03-2011 06:32 PM

Try loosening the tension of your quilt in the frame; you don't have to be able to bounce a coin on the quilt. I allow enough ease to be able to push with my off hand underneath to create a dimple on top to put the stitches on the needle. I can usually do 4-6 on the needle at a time.

T. 08-03-2011 07:04 PM

can we see what the other side looks like? THanks.

Linda1 08-03-2011 07:04 PM

Your quilting is always so beautiful. Thanks for showing how you do it.

RobertaMarie 08-03-2011 08:03 PM

Andrea, your work is so fascinatingly beautiful. I don't know how you can quilt and not get a sore finger. I would love to learn, as thimbles never fit my fingers well. (any kind) I admire your work so much and I am so happy for you that you enjoy something you do so well. I am sure your entries will bring more recognition to you and your talent. Thank you for sharing and God bless you, my friend.

grandma Janice 08-03-2011 08:05 PM

thank you for the pictures, I'm a visual person so I learn more from seeing. I'm not sure I have the patience to do single stitches, I've hand quilted for so long I would forget and do several stitches. I just sit and drool over your quilts.
