Thank you so very much for posting these pics!!! I'm hand quilting a queen size and using the stab stitch. It is slow but I just find it too difficult to load more than one stitch on the needle. I am definitely going to try your method. The pictures really make it clear what you are doing. You are such an inspiration!

3incollege 08-09-2011 04:36 PM

oh how I wish on a million stars I could do what you do. I bought a wholecloth quilt top and it is already marked. Maybe a could to start with that. Someday.

OHSue 08-09-2011 05:21 PM

Your work is incredible, so even and tiny. And all this freehand.... wow, you are something else! Just beautiful quilting.

talented...

It looks beautiful

Noiseynana 08-18-2011 02:03 PM

This is the way I quilt also. Only I use #9 needles and about 4 or 5 stitches at a time. My hubby made me a frame out of pvc pipe and I use plastic clamps to hold the quilt in place. It is made to fit me in my computer chair. That way its just right . The height is made for me. I'll send a picture with this.

Noiseynana 08-18-2011 02:09 PM

If you would like to see pictures , you'll have to email me . The dang things wouldn't work. I do have pictures to share but can't get 'em on the attachment

Your stitches are so tiny. How many stitches per inch?

That depens of the fabric and the batting I use - in general I do 12-14 per inch (counted on the top). Sometimes I can do one or two more.

Your work is BEAUTIFUL !!!

I am a hand quilted also & no thimble.
I am going to try the one stitch instead of the rocking,I can do it fairly well, but stitches are not always uniform.
I have some tops I did & will quilt them when our weather gets cooler.

Thank you so much for the detailed photos of your stitches !! :-D

Beautiful workmanship! Inspires me to keep trying, mine are "slightly" mismatched.

Wow, what beautiful stitches, I envy you. Thanks for sharing, I must give this technique a try.

Lovely work!

I am new to quilting, and would like to learn your style.

My sewing background in zero. There are no classes offered near my home.

I hope that you don't mind a novice asking some dumb questions. :)

Mainly, what is a single stitch? How do you do it?

I've looked online and could find no information.

Loading one stitch on the needle at a time- poke needle down through the layers and right back up through the layers in one stitch, then draw the thread through after it- instead of loading several stitches on the needle before drawing the thread through. Most quilters load at least a couple of stitches on a needle at a time because they feel the work goes faster that way- which makes borntohandquilts exquisite, time-consuming work all the more amazing! :)

I just LOVE this thread. Like many other people, I am in awe of Andrea's quilting. When she said she only does one stitch at a time, I thought "I think it's just a bit more efficient to take a couple instead of just one". Well... last night I was quilting and found myself using a "Andrea technique" - one stitch at a time. Here's why I really think it work for her.

Many of us handquilters do not use a thimble, including myself. No matter how much time I take to insist that my finger utilizes this contraction, it just never feels comfortable. So...

1. Taking one stitch at a time makes is SEW much easier on my fingernail to push the stich through, thus my finger isn't sore afterwards and I can quilt longer.

2. Taking one stitch helps my stitches become more even because I place my needle exactly where it needs to go each and every time so I have much more control. My stitching around curves are much more fluid and smooth instead of 'choppy' and irratic.

3. Taking one stitch at a time greatly helps with my inserting the needle STRAIGHT down, so my bottom stitches look a lot more like my top ones.

4. Taking one stitch at a time really allows me to slow down and ENJOY the process. I thought it'd really be a lot slower, but I'm finding that in reality it really isn't. In my own opinion, for me handquilting is all about the enjoyment of the process. Doesn't always need to be a "get 'er done" project, and if I have one of those I simply machine quilt.

I just wanted to share what I've been learning this week. I'm sure I'll continue to learn even more as I go on. Hope you are all having a great day. :)

These are good points! I think I'll give it a try.

Hope you weather the hurricane alright! I stocked up on some items we'll need if/when the power goes out. Praying for a fun and cozy weekend, and for no damage or injuries...

Beautiful quilting, and great tutorial. I've never tried hand quilting, but maybe someday I will give it a shot.

Your quilting is beautiful, and I am proud to say, this is how my mother quilted before her health became worse.

INCREDIBLE!!!! Thank you for sharing!

I enjoy looking at the pictures of your work. I only hand quilt as well, and you are quite an inspiration. Thank you for taking the time to share this

Elisabrat 09-28-2011 08:27 PM

You are one amazingly patient woman. I can't work with a thimble either and end up with torn up thumbs from pushing the needle through all the time! Beautiful work you do.

MaryAnnMc 09-29-2011 01:50 PM

Thanks for showing us your beautiful work. I can't think of a better excuse for sitting by the window watching the birds and butterflies.

If you EVER have a chance to see one of Andrea's quilts in person, take it. The work is amazing. I can only spout superlatives in regards to her quilting. Hm, one stitch at a time - maybe I will give that a try.

Just to mention it...one of my quilts is on display in the World Quilt Show this year. They will be shown at the Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, CA, October 13-16. I feel so proud to say that the quilt won a blue ribbon....

No surprised at all! Though thrilled for you, of course. :) I wish I wasn't on the other side of the country, or I'd go to see it! Congratulations!

I am completely self-taught. I learned through books, trial and error... and I am still learning and practicing. Every quilt brings a new experience.
