Quilted Travel Bag

Travel Bag Tute.

I enjoy making quilted bags. This is by far the largest one to date. I am not really proficient with doing tutorials yet (still working on this skill) and I’m sure I’ve missed some steps. Please PM me if you have any questions. This bag is very basic. I made it for a specific purpose, but it could be modified to suit any needs. I rarely use a pattern and I never make the same style of bag twice (attention deficit?). I have been bitten by the free motion quilting bug and will use any excuse to quilt something.
Someone asked how I put the text into the photos and the answer is that I use Microsoft Paint for that. It comes standard with Microsoft Office and is very user friendly. Anyway, here is the tute.

thanks, dilyn, for posting this great tut.

Nice tute. May have to try this one. Especially liked the bottom using the thin plywood. Seems like the foam core board doesn't hold up as well when you use a bag lots of stuff.

Some really practical tips here too - I especially like how you constructed the straps, and also how you bound the main body pieces, making construction so simple. Great job!

QuilterChick 02-16-2012 05:15 AM

Dilyn, thanks for the great tutorial. Could you please post a picture of the bag standing up as finished? and the dimensions when finished? Love your method !

CharlotteO 02-16-2012 06:18 AM

Great Tute Dilyn, and a great bag. Even I could make this one.

What a great nice big bag. I've been looking for a pattern for a big bag to use as a overnight bag while traveling via the airplanes. I think this would be perfect.

Can one of you talented ladies convert this file to PDF format and post it? I'm on dial-up and can barely get the pictures to download before my computer times out! Thanks!

damaquilts 02-17-2012 05:51 AM

Thanks . This came at a perfect time since a friend wants me to make bags to donate to Japanese Chin rescue. She is getting 2 panels with JC's on them.

littlehud 02-17-2012 05:56 AM

This is a great tutorial! Thanks for all the details and pics.

tlpa 02-17-2012 06:51 PM

Is your FMQ done on a regular machine or LA?
Nice work btw!

kathdavis 02-17-2012 07:55 PM

Great tutorial! I don't make bags, but I think I will give this one a try. I think the prebinding makes it so much easier. Nice tip.

Rose Burnett 02-18-2012 01:26 AM

Love your bag. Your tutorial was informative and easy to understand. Wish I had the courage to tackle making one.

I use a regular sewing machine. I have a Juki 2000 and I use it for piecing and FMQ.

lynn7448 02-18-2012 05:24 AM

This is lovely. Some of the pictures that have the text on the right hand side cut off part of the text so I am unable to view all of the instructions. Is it only me that has this issue and if so, what can I do to be able to view all of the verbiage from the tutorial. I would like to make this bag to take as my carry on for our trip to England in May.

glorcour 02-18-2012 06:41 AM

thanks for this - very nice bag

Anna O 02-18-2012 09:22 AM

Great bag and easy to follow tutorial. (and it has a zipper!.) Will need to try to make this one. Thanks for sharing.

Sandynorm 02-18-2012 06:47 PM

WOW, great bag, and I love the idea for the hard bottom being covered with batting.

Hopefully this works, I haven't posted as of yet on the new site.

juneayerza 02-18-2012 08:45 PM

If you are like me and your eyes aren't what they use to be, you can open the PDF and enlarge it to 150%, just make sure you open your window all the way.

Pink Dogwood 02-19-2012 10:40 AM

Thanks June...I knew there was some talented lady who could convert this for us. Great bag...can't wait to make it now that we have a PDF.

Karenjane 02-19-2012 11:46 AM

So, are you making me one Sis? Nice tutorial and I love your quilting. I'll need a lesson in butterflies and dragonflies next time we get together.

June--

Thanks for doing the PDF for us! Now I can save the tut for when I need it. You're the best:thumbup:

juneayerza 02-19-2012 02:03 PM

You are welcome Sue. I'm so glad there is such a thing as PDF's, it just makes things so much more easier to save.

lizzy 02-19-2012 02:33 PM

Thanks for the great tut. I love your quilting.

Millstream Mom 02-22-2012 02:23 PM

Wonderful tutorial! My computer cut off the right hand side as well, so Thank You JuneA for converting to a PDF for me to print out in full! I have a JellyRoll waiting at home and am looking forward to trying this! I've never tackled FMQ so now might be the time to experiment :)
