Start with at least 32 strips (2 1/2" wide) x WOF.

Sew 4 strips together, side by side. Iron all seams in the same direction. Cut the left side to where you have a clean edge to work off of. From that edge cut the strip set into 8" segments. Thie should yeild 5 segments. You will need two segments to make 1 block. Do this with all strip sets.

Pick out 2 segments. Fit them together, 1 on top of the other, with the middle seams lined up. This next step works well on a rotating cutting mat. Center the middle seam in the center of the rotating cutting mat, on the 6" hash mark. Line up your ruler on the 2" mark on the top and the 10" mark on the bottom. Trim the segments even. Rotate the board now so the bottom is at the top. Trim on the same 2" and 10" hash marks. This will square up the segments to 8" square. Rotate the cutting mat again so that you can cut the square into two trangles.

Take the two triagles and turn them so that the points are facing each other. Take the top from each and place it 1/4 turn to the empty space next to the triangle. This will make your block. I turn the block so that I am looking at a triangle. Take the top left section and match it to the bottom left section. Sew it from the center out. You will have bias edges so it is important not to pull the material. Repeat this process with the right side.

Iron these strip sets. Match up the sets at the center of each, you should be able to nest your seams in the middle. Keeping the seams nested, sew from one edge to the other. Again, trim your block to a square 10" block. This will get rid of the points that are sticking out at the corners. Sash between the blocks and border. Enjoy.

Oh wow! I wish there were pictures of each step for this tute. I'm a visual person, and written directions just kinda get me dizzy and I have problems following them. But, if I had pictures............!

Thanks.

It is a process. The next time we make one we will do a step by step. May be a while. We are new to this.

vtretire 01-12-2011 06:49 AM

Thanks for the tute. One question though. Was this quilt made with just one jelly roll or more? I was given one jelly roll as a gift this Christmas and am not sure what I want to do with it yet.

Grandma Peg 01-12-2011 08:02 AM

I am going out on a limb here and saying, yes, one jelly roll. There are usually 40 strips in a roll and she starts with at least 32. It looks like you will need extra for the sashing and ofcourse, the backing.

Love this tutorial. Thanks.

plainpat 01-12-2011 10:44 AM

I wondered the same.....

I have never used a jelly roll - don't know where to start!
Can you help?

kwiltnutt 01-12-2011 12:44 PM

OMG..........thanks so much for this. I have been cutting up all my scraps (and believe me,I have so many I'm embarrassed) using Bonnie Hunter's Scrap Saver system and I have a huge Rubbermaid container with JUST 2 1/2 inch strips!!!! I am going to use this pattern.................thank you!!!

CarrieAnne 01-12-2011 12:48 PM

thanks!

plainpat 01-12-2011 02:29 PM

This might help....Jelly Rolls, charm squares etc are pre cuts bought from quilt shops. Some ppl cut their own. Jelly rolls are strips 2 1/2" wide by width of fabric....mostly 42-44" long. They typically include 40 strips of fabric but can vary

That's really pretty. I like that. And some quilts don't need a different color for binding. You did good!

sosewcrazy 01-12-2011 04:38 PM

I love the way your quilt turned out, and love the colors! I do better with more pictures, too, but will definitely try this out with some scraps first.

craftymatt2 01-12-2011 04:40 PM

Ragann63 01-12-2011 06:12 PM

I really like that and I have two jelly rolls I bought in Paducah just waiting for a pattern!!

Love your quilt and love the use of the Jelly Roll. I have like 4 and wasn't sure how to use them.
Could you post a picture how you cut out the triangles? I cannot picture it in my mind.

thanks

auntlucy 01-12-2011 07:10 PM

... Pick out 2 segments. Fit them together, 1 on top of the other, with the middle seams lined up. ...

For this part, do you place the 2 segments both right side up with the seams running in the same direction?

auntlucy 01-12-2011 07:15 PM

and by "points of the triangles", do you mean the corners of the right angles?

Rabbit 01-12-2011 07:24 PM

yes. line up the middle seam on 6" hash and turn board so that you are looking at the square as a diamond. Cut the diamond in half. Turn the diamonds so that the points are facing each other.

Rabbit 01-12-2011 07:28 PM

Not the corners. the points in the middle. try it with paper first to see how it will go together. color the paper like it were strips. no wasting fabric.

SaraSewing 01-14-2011 07:13 AM

Did anyone notice the kit for this quilt in the latest Keepsake Quilting catalog, called "Sashay". what a difference color makes!

jdavis 01-22-2011 04:14 PM

This is all very nice, but I think it would help if you included a few more pictures of the process.
