This is one of the options for the roses in the Baltimore Album BOM. It can be used for the March 8th block.

Cut a strip of fabric W/O/F by 1-1/4" wide.

Press fabric strip as shown in 1st photo, both edges in, overlapping.

Cut a piece of hand quilting thread 18" long, Hide knot in fold of fabric.

Turn end of strip in 1/8" and tack.

End has been tacked, begin stitching on a downward slant, taking 3 stitches, exiting at lower edge.

Looping the thread to the back of the strip, take 3 stitches to upper edge.

Looping is important to get the ruffled effect.

Loop from the back of the upper edge, 3 stitches down to lower edge

Continue this up & down stitch for about 3-4", then pull thread to create gathers.

Thread pulled showing gathers, continue this method across entire strip of fabric, occasionally tacking to hold in place.

Entire strip completed, ends up being about 18" long, secure end as beginning, tacking in last 1/8" under.

Add an extra piece of fabric to the wrong side of the background fabric underneath where you will be attaching the strips. The fabric will pull as you stitch and you need extra support.

Pin the end of the strip in the middle of where you are placing the rose and tack it securely in place.

Begin the 1st circle of the ruched strip and pin in place. Tack each petal in place hiding the tack stitch in a fold of the fabric.

Start 2nd round of ruched strip, tucking it under the first round

See how I have tucked so the first round is over the 2nd. Now tack the second round as before

Continue in rounds, tucking under the previous and tacking each round as you go.

This is the corner block of the Baltimore Album BOM.

Finished rose, tack the end of the strip under so you can't see it. See how it is ruffled by slipping the rounds underneath the previous round.

Thanks Gwenny, sometimes I try to take shortcuts, and shouldn't.

capucine 03-07-2011 09:30 PM

I agree totally! I am a daily reader, can hardly wait each morning to read all the postings, but also a real newbie, only 6 mo or less and get soooo very confused with the abbreviations, some explanation somewhere would be very helpful....but as all the other ladies have mentioned, I learn so much every time I am here, really appreciate all the expert advise and goodwill shown by all.

ruthruff3 03-08-2011 07:22 AM

Could you use ribbon with this process as well? If so, how wide would you want the ribbon to be?

JacquiGates 03-08-2011 07:40 AM

would you happen to have a pdf of this? I would love to do one on a dress that I am making for my gd...a nice spring dress as we have had a very harsh winter this year and we really need spring....

BJ SewKkrazzy 03-08-2011 08:07 AM

great instructions...love doing these..which I had learned from Judith Baker Montano...beautiful colors! Though I have never made one so big! great job!

What a great idea, I'll have to try it. I would think silk ribbon, 1/2" wide would work up beautiful, especially is hand dyed!

Here is a block where I used a red floral calico fabric, total different look

Arleners 03-08-2011 08:14 AM

Thanks for that! It looks beautiful. Your instructions are very clear.

This is gorgeous too - these could become an addiction. I might try the ribbon too.
