I started my scrap rug today and it is really going rather fast. I am amazed at how easy it is. Thank you so much for the tutorial. Plan on a full size room rug if I can handle it. Thanks again and keep up the great job of showing us how to do things like this.

I see that Nancy's Notions sells cord for rugs/baskets.

Awesome tutorial wow, I will go and buy me some of that clothesline. Where did you buy yours at?

This is such a super idea, and great pix with your tute!! We "just happen" to be going to Wally's today, so I will be checking out the clothesline section. :) Thanks for sharing. I remember making a yarn rug for my doll with the wooden spool "French knitting", and as someone else mentioned here, it was difficult to keep it from bowling...so I will have to be careful to not let that happen. ;) I KNEW I was keeping all my selvage strips for some reason!!!!

Check Lowe's and Home Depot for cotton clothesline too...and if all else fails, Uhaul sells nylon rope of the same size...should work, it just won't be cotton!

craftiladi 01-16-2010 07:04 AM

Oh thanks so much for sharing this. You reminded me I even have the tool to make the fabric strips.....so many projects so little time...

Great tutorial! Thank you for sharing!

I have been looking for a project like this to use up some older print fabrics that I am no longer fond of. They have nice colors/tones, I just don't care for the print anymore. Great way to use it up and not have to see the print.

I want to make larger rugs for the kitchen and bedroom.

Just have to remember to pick up the clotheline now.

Thanks again
DeeDee

you can order it online walmart.

ConnieF 01-19-2010 03:19 AM

Pacific Fabrics has it and it is 100 feet for $4.00 + tax

ConnieF 01-19-2010 03:21 AM

The tooth brush rugs are wonderfulllll and so fun to make and so are the clothes line rugs and the rushing rugs abd the wagon wheel rugs you could say I love making rugs and weaving then is fun ti onmy frame I bought

craftiladi 01-19-2010 08:51 AM

Ok I am going to attempt this rug project. The first home depot [las vegas nv] I went to didn't have the cotton rope, my HD here at home [ut.] did have it. My first thought was to get the longest package I could but then it hit me, I would have to hand sew the rope once its covered, as how would I get a lg circle of rope in my machine...or am I just not getting it?

NauDeeGal 01-19-2010 10:51 AM

the way that I understood it....you stitch it together from the inside out. you only pin where you add on new fabrics and the initial fabric covering the end at the start of the clothesline (center of the rug).

If I am wrong please correct my understanding.

I am sooooo glad to see this rug, have been working in sewing room and found a lot of "what was I thinking" fabric and now I know what to do with it. Thanks sooo much. Your rug is gorgeous.

Ms Grace 01-21-2010 06:28 AM

Mary,
Thanks so much! You make it look very easy.
I do have a lot of scraps to use up.

Yes, we'll ALL have rugs in our houses now! :D

quiltingfan 01-21-2010 06:35 AM

I am definitely going to try this. I love the braided rugs and have always wanted to try it. Can't wait to gt busy on one more project.

It would be in their fabric department. If not I will find you a site.Okay?!!!
Dont give up!!!

sewcrazygirl 01-23-2010 09:30 PM

anyone make one? love to see samples?

craftiladi 01-23-2010 10:20 PM

Does it matter how long the fabric strips are? i am assuming if i don't want the rug multi colors just cut the longest strips you can handle.
I bought the rope and hopefully will attempt this tomorrow.

purplemem 01-24-2010 03:47 AM

How do we clean our rugs? I want to make one for my kitchen, but it will need to be durable and definitely cleanable...

mary quite contrary 01-24-2010 05:31 AM

If it is small enough and the stitches close enough together you can throw it in the washer like you would any rug.

I got mine at Ace hardware (it's not mainstays, though). It's all cotton and so far I have about half my rug done and the needle is going through it just fine.

sewcrazygirl 01-24-2010 12:50 PM

Can you make this rug rectangular? Or does it default to circular???

mary quite contrary 01-24-2010 01:29 PM

You could make it oval. I suppose rather than go around you could go back and forth. I've never tried it. Would it stay flat at each end or would you end up with a kidney shape?

cande 01-24-2010 05:02 PM

I'd love to make a couple for my kitchen but wondering how big I would be able to make it with an ordinary sewing machine. It wouldn't be able to be rolled like you would a quilt: at least, not as much. I'm still waiting for pictures to see what others have done..

The bulk of the rug always stay on the outside. I started mine and went ooops, so I had to "flip" it after the first couple of rows because had I continued, the bulk would have been on the inside. I'm not sure if I'm making sense.

But for better or worse this is my first one. (Can someone tell me if I used the right stitch?) This is my machine's "zig-zag". It doesn't look like the same one in the tutorial.

I had fun, though! :)

dkabasketlady 01-24-2010 08:18 PM

I've made more rugs than quilts. I use a clothespin instead of a straight pin, it acts as an extra hand. I roll up my extra fabric first so I don't have to stop and do this. It's faster and easier for me when switching fabrics or just using the same fabric for one rug.

dkabasketlady 01-24-2010 08:20 PM

They are machine washable, but don't put them in the dryer.

Nursesews 01-25-2010 03:51 AM

Love your rug!!! Great job

Ms Grace 01-25-2010 06:03 AM

I love the colors!
It's great. :-D

craftiladi 01-25-2010 03:40 PM

To make it oval I would think if you start the center a longer fold that would make it more oval...still need to find the time to do this.

Graet tip!!!!

purplemem 01-29-2010 09:15 AM

I just ordered some online from ebay. Our walgreens here didn't carry it, neither did Dollar Tree or Walmart. It was $9 incl shipping. That seemed high to me. Is this the cost I should expect?
