I have to admit that yarn is a beast of a mess! You'd think I'd have learned to stay away after I crocheted an ahgan for our RV. We named it Faux Kitty cause who needs a real cat to shed everywhere when Faux Kitty does it so well herself! Black eyelash yarn, tan carpet need I say more?

Baskets, I don't have the cute comb hair yarn, but still wanted to make a chicken! Here's my first try and your directions were great! I now want to make the bigger ones...what sizes do you use for the squares on your 6" chickens?

She's adorable!! I love the rick rack hair! I don't have a 6" chick with me to measure, I believe the beaks, 2 nested to look like an open beak, were maybe 2 inch squares to start with. The tail squares were about 3-1/2" or so. Sorry I can't be more specific you'll just have to play around until she looks good. But that's the fun part, you can't make them wrong, just make them your way. Have fun!
Looking at your picture again I usually put the beak seam down but I think I like your way better!

I will have to try this!! Great job!!

Those are some groovy chicks :XD: I made mine with two minny log cabins and filled them with plastic pellets and cotton batting. I love the addition of eyelash yarn. I might make another one only groovy this time!

I had a friend take a picture of her large chicken I made for her last year. You can see how I doubled the beak.

So glad to come across this tutorial. I have one of the chickens Doreen Speckman made - autographed no less. Thank you for giving her credit for first making these chickens. I think her daughter sold the pattern for a while after Doreen passed. She (Doreen) would have the biggest laugh at the "funky" chickens showing up everywhere! Can't wait to dig into my selvage stash and make up a couple of these.

lisajane 09-06-2011 02:13 PM

I am a funky chicken fan!

Thank you for sharing this tute!! I have a book by Sharlene Jorgenson that gives instructions to make these but I like your picture tutorial better!! It's much easier to understand how to go about it by looking at the photos rather than drawn illustrations.

In Dec of 2000 a friend gave me a tiny one that had been made into a Christmas ornament. It was made with a narrow long cabin pattern, but I have been making crumb quilt squares and now I want to try one of these with crumbs. I really like how your selvage chicken looks!! I just measured the square that was used, for the Christmas ornament and it is 2 inches (finished size).

I can always use more selvages. My dh thinks not, but what does he know about important things like that?

Corky 09-13-2011 04:14 PM

Thanks so much! I love working with selvedges and these chicks are darling! Perfect project!

SandyinZ4 10-01-2011 04:59 PM

This was a wonderful tut. Thanks so much. I will make one soon and post a picture. I think for those selvages that are cut too close for much else, this would be a great use for them. So greta of you to share and everyone's creations are great. I think my guild member friends might each get one for Christmas.

agdetrick 10-02-2011 04:46 PM
