I suppose I could make jelly-roll strips by stacking and whacking all sorts of scraps -- just line them up on a rotary mat, get out the plastic ruler and whack? 2 1/2" strips?
I live in Canada - don't think we have jelly roll producers here - mailing costs double the prices of everything! |

A few months ago Tuesday Mornings had some really cheap jelly rolls for sale. I bought one and later discovered that there were 40 strips in it BUT they had many multiples of the SAME FABRIC! So there I sat with this awful jellyroll and along comes this tute. So throwing caution to the wind and KNOWING that same colors were going to touch and crowd together I made this jelly roll top. I used 2X2 1/2 inch white 'spacers' to separate each strip during the first sew together. After that I just let chance take its turn. This is what resulted. I ended up with a lot of same fabrics together, also. I'm trying to decide if I should cut it in half or thirds and mix it up a bit more. I love the idea and it was extremely fast! Thanks for the tute!

Super Fast Jelly-roll Quilt
Approximate finished size: 43 x 53 - - This size is appropriate for a childs quilt as requested by our local Project Linus coordinator. (February 12, 2011) What you will need: 20 strips cut at 3 wide by width of fabric (or enough 3 scraps to total 800) 7 strips cut at 2 x WOF for border Directions: Sew all the strips end to end in random order. Cut the selvages off as you go. You will have a very long strip of fabric approximately 800 inches long. (20 strips x 40) Important: Cut the first long strip in half and put in your stash. By doing this, your seams will be staggered as you stitch them together. Of course, if you are using scraps and not WOF, all bets are off. Now find the 2 ends of the strip and put right sides together and start sewing!!! Sew down the long side of the strip to the end and cut the loop at the end of the strip. You now have a very long strip that is 2-jellyroll strips wide. If you want to at this point, you can press them open, but pressing is really not necessary until you have the whole thing sewn. Remember this is supposed to be a fun and FAST quilt. Dont stress over anything! Next...find the two ends of this long strip again and put right sides together. Sew all the way down to the end and cut the loop at the end again. You will now have a strip that is 4 jellyroll strips wide. Now... find the two ends of this long strip and put right sides together. Sew all the way down to the end and cut the loop at the end. You will now have a strip that is 8 jellyroll strips wide. Again...find the two ends of the long strip and put right sides together. Sew all the way down to the end and cut the loop at the end. You will now have a that is 16 jellyroll strips wide. You are finished!!! You now have the center of your quilt. It should measure approximately 40 x 50 Square it up. Add your 2 strips all the way around for the one and only border. |
I wanted to add the 2" blocks of color that another quilter had posted, but I felt that to a certain extent, it wouldn't be fair to her. I may verbally share the tip with someone else, but I just didn't think I ought to print it out in these instructions that I will be handing to the participants in tomorrow's Sew in at the Post.
I did however feel that everyone on the Board would/could appreciate my math instructions, since I have found them throughout this thread. If my posting is not wanted, I am sure that we can have the administrator remove it - - until then, it stays with this thread because it is absolutely the original poster's contribution - - this is just meant to enhance the project. <wave> |
