Some folks have been asking about the strip pieced method to do this block. With some help from my favorite feline, this is what I came up with.

This is just a test to make sure font is not too small.

Now, square and press

Moonpi 05-02-2008 03:26 PM

The basic sequence for the rest of the block stays the same.
* Add sides, press and square
* Add top and bottom, press and square
* Mark centers on each edge
* Cut in preparation for next layer

Chele 05-02-2008 04:00 PM

Wow! That is wonderful Moonpi! Your owner did a good job too! I love the pineapple block, but I thought I was limited to 4,789 paper pieced pieces! Gotta try this tomorrow! Thanks so much!

ShellyQ 05-02-2008 04:12 PM

Thankyou so much Moonpi, that is so cool and I think your quilting assistant is adorable :P . I usually foundation piece these, so it's really great to have an alternative as one gets a bit peeved with picking out all the itty bitty bits of paper.

BDor 05-02-2008 05:53 PM

Great job--you made me think I could do it!

amma 05-02-2008 06:30 PM

great tutorial moonpi and Kitty! It was very easy to follow and i have always wondered how to do that but it looked way too hard but you made it seem doable. Another one for me to bookmark to try when i finish off my other projects...

That cat is amazing. Where did she learn to make such great quilt blocks?
Keep up the good work kitty. :D

Loretta, I love your old quilt

This pattern lends itself to so many color variations - 2, 3, or more colors, and background can be light, dark, or bright. Patrice was kind enough to remind me of another construction method too - assembling like a log cabin, but slipping folded squares in as you go for corners.

I like this method because you can mess up a bit, re-square it at the next level, and still come out with a great looking project. Unless you get waaaay out of whack, you could get through a whole quilt top without ripping seams out.

Thank you for taking the trouble to produce such clear instructions, I will certainly be giving it a go.

There is no set pattern. I just demonstrated the method. You can adjust it to fit your needs.

blahel 05-03-2008 08:09 PM

i forgot to say it was so helpful that you also showed us so clearly what colors you used as i would not otherwise have a clue as to where to put which color as i am very color challenged!

Lucky Patsy's 05-03-2008 09:39 PM

Great job Moonpi. May I will try it.....someday.

mfre42day 05-06-2008 11:24 AM

you are so talented and creative! You made that look like a piece of cake to this beginner who decided on Sunday not to try this for another 50 or so years... So can you help me figure out how to save these directions to my computer please. Do I have to save each inidividual direction or is there a way to save the whole thing at once?

Moonpi 05-06-2008 01:29 PM

My slow dialup connection will not let me get the slideshow loaded here, even with the graphics squeezed down to 200dpi. Maybe your best option is to bookmark it.

Elizabeth A. 05-06-2008 02:11 PM

Very nice work Moonpi and mommy, I will bookmark this for another time!

mary705 05-09-2008 01:45 AM

Thanks for the instructions Moonpi. This is something I may try, and I can use my new ruler on some of it.
