Valentine Candy Block

4 Attachment(s)
This tutorial will show you how I made the 12" finished Valentine Candy Block from this thread: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...y-t292328.html

28 - 2.5" squares in different fabrics
4 - 3.0" squares in different fabrics
4 - 3.0" squares of background fabric
1 - 4.5" square of background fabric

Draw a grid on foamcore board as shown and use for placement of the fabrics... Pictures 1 and 2

Make four half-square triangles using a 3.0" square of a scrap fabric and a 3.0" square of background fabric. Picture 3 shows the method I used. This will give you two identical half-square triangles that are 2.5" unfinished. I make sure that those two identical half-square triangles are put into two different blocks so there will be no repeat fabrics in the block.

Sew the 2.5" squares together in rows, then sew the rows together as shown on the placement board. TIP: Take a cellphone photo of your layout before you start to sew. Refer to the photo when sewing the squares together in case they get out of order.

The unfinished block should measure 12.5"

I hope you enjoy this block and will post a picture of a quilt that you make using these directions. I'm currently working on another quilt with a different layout that uses four of these blocks. I'll post a picture when I finish it.

Can you share the lovely boarder pattern. Size of the dresden plate and random blocks tossed about is brilliant. All my dresden patterns seem to be for 12" onlys.

Thanks for sharing this. This is exactly what I was looking for to make a quilt for my DGD. I cut up a charm pack to make mine. I have 12 of the hearts made. The fabric is all pastel batiks. I just came back here for the tutorial for the dresdens. I will work on those this evening.

The quilt you made using these blocks is adorable. Thanks for the tutorial on making the block.

I love the Valentine Candy quilt. Our small quilting group want to each make a quilt, throw, or wall hanging using this pattern. Do you happen to have written instructions/directions on how you set the quilt up. Did you put the sashing on each individual block? Or did you put them together in rows? What size are the triangles? And the corners? How did you set up the mini dresdens? Thank you so much for sharing your talents. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I'm honored that your group would like to make a quilt like mine. Unfortunately, I made up the pattern as I went along, and I don't remember everything that I did. The quilt has been gifted so I don't have it to take measurements.

The attached picture might help you see how I put the heart blocks together. I used instructions from "Jan in VA" for making the setting triangles. I made a copy of her instructions years ago and can't find where she posted that. Maybe she will give you her instructions if you write to her. Here is a link to her profile: https://www.quiltingboard.com/member...va-u20174.html

I don't understand your question about the mini dresdens. Did you see SheriR's tutorial on how they are made? Maybe that will answer your question. Here is the link: https://www.quiltingboard.com/tutori...g-t300467.html

I hope some of this has been helpful. I'd love to see a picture of your quilts when they are finished.

lgroten 04-13-2019 12:31 PM

Thank you Jenn for getting back to me. The question about the mini dresden was the same - how to set them up. This picture does help with setting up the hearts. And I think that we can figure out the borders. Thanks for the link for the triangles. I will certainly take pictures and send them to you. Thanks again for your reply

I can't figure out how to make a link to take you directly to the instructions. Do a search for:

in the top right hand corner where it says Search Forums
