My past week has been happy but tearful. My grandmother past away this past december. She was 92 1/2 yrs old. She was sharp as a tack. Her estate was finally settled last month. The old home place is being cleaned out and sold. She had left everything to her children. She had a codisile which for the family to go by. It is amazing how death can cause feuds and family wars. My Aunt is the one taking care of everything. Even though my grandmother wanted it that way, her siblings feel it was wrong. I am sure my grandmother has "rolled over in her grave" a few times since passing. I had asked to walk thru the house just one more time. I was allowed to this past Saturday, when the rest of the family was in and taking there goods away. My Uncle was up from Georgia. He gave me a set of dressers that was my grandmothers from the 40's. Right now they are setting in my kitchen against the wall untill they are scrubbed down again. So far I have wiped them down 4 times and the solution is still nasty. Now no one has used these since the 60's when the last 2 daughters left home. The drawers were lined with news paper. The oldest one was The Washington Post from 1954! Dear Abby back then was a hoot! The news itself is something else. My son is due home tonight from WVU. I saved the papers for him to read. My grandmother was a sewer, I had asked my aunt who was left her Sewing machine. Granma had left it to her. My aunt asked me if I would like to have it, she had no room. I am now the owner of my grandma's 1955 66-16 singer. It has not been sewn with for over 35 years since I was a kid. I am now 44. She had hurt her arm and could no longer sew. It even has the black singer button holer in the box with it's attachments. The stand is in exceptional shape. It has one small scratch on the top. It took me over 5 hrs to clean it up and oil it. She is a beautiful machine and stitches perfectly! I have decided to name her "Ginny". My grandmothers name was Virginia. I always loved it when my great uncle called her Ginny. Needless to say, I have shed some tears this week, and remembered some great memories. I even have 'The Old Maid cards her and I used to play with when I was in kindergarden.

    Great story.

I know you will get many years of good used out of 'Ginny', and the memories will bring smiles as you sew.

What a wonderful story. I'm so glad that Ginny has a new home where she'll be loved and taken care of.
It's sometimes sad when family members feel that they aren't as involved as they wanted to be. There were 6 of us when mom and dad died and I must say that we didn't fight over anything. That was they way they would have wanted it. What people sometimes forget is that the "things" aren't their's but rather their mother or father's to dispose of as they wish. Mom and dad left us with a lifetime of wonderful memories---far more valuable than all the "things" they left.

How wonderful that you have such fond memories of your grandmother to get you through this sad time. Your aunt was very generous to give you such a treasure. I hope Ginny brings you great joy and fond memories of Grandma.
