Hi - welcome from Minnesota! Check out CraigsList for sewing machines or WalMart online which has refurbished ones for less than $75. A friend in Green Bay got one of the refurbished ones from WalMart for only $45 and it's still going strong two years later. All you really need is one that does basic stitching and you'll be fine.

Welcome from England!
I mainly quilt by hand but have just purchased my dream sewing machine. I am saying that simply because my cheap Singer really did do everything I needed it to do for 30 years and it wasn't working properly. Honestly the super easy needle threader on my new machine is one of my most needed bits.....
