Thanks for the post. We have a newbie quilter in our senior group and I will forward this info off to her. I have a Bernina but that must be the newer walking foot since I haven't had a chance to drill the center out of mine to have an open toe. I have tried to piece with the walking foot but just two layers of fabric doesn't work well on my 1530.

great tutorial to have in your back pocket... This would be a great project to pass on to anyone interested in learning to quilt and what a lovely piece.

I think there maybe an error in their directions for testing accurate quarter inch. I thought that charm squares were five inches so if three are sewn together the middle one should measure 4 1/2 inches not 2.

It said 88 2 1/2 inch squares. You cut the charm squares into 4 pieces.

Although I am an experienced quilter, I am basically self taught, and I enjoyed this tutorial for its very explicit directions and tips. Thanks for the link. Also what a beautiful cardinal!

Lovely pattern and great tutorial. I am surprised they did not do the applique first. I was taught to do the applique first and then cut down the background to the appropriate size. Is this just a matter of preference or is there a reason for the order?
