switching embroidery from Viking to Bernina
I want to start embroidery again. In the past, I have used many Viking machines and bought most of my designs from Viking. So now I have a Bernina 590 and want to use some of my old designs on it. OK, I have transferred some of old designs from CD's to Thumb Drives and the files show up on my machine and I can open them up. On other CD's I can't seem to do this. I know that some machines can read different file extensions and I have been selecting the .PES files from the CD's where available. Some discs don't have this option. Anyway, it is confusing as to which design collections I may be able to use on my new machine. I even have some old design collections on floppy discs. I haven't tried those yet. I have even thought of attaching an external CD drive to the USB port of the 590. I actually did this back a few years ago on a Viking SE and it worked. As I have not embroidered anything for a few years, I feel like a fish out of water. Anyone have any words of wisdom. The shop I bought my Bernina from really does not provide much support on using the machines at all. I have attempted to take their three-class embroidery class 3 times. The first time, the design she emailed us to download on a thumb drive did not work. The next two classes she offered were cancelled she said because not enough people signed up. I recently downloaded an embroidery mastery workbook from the Bernina website which stated that it was intended to be used by the dealer in the classes we were supposed to get. So... I am just going to dig in and try and work my way through the workbook myself.

First, confirm the format for your machine. Will your machine stitch out PES designs? No need to work through PES files if they don't work for your machine.
Do you have software on your computer/PC for embroidery files? Usually you would open the "Viking" file in the software. Then "Save as" your machine format extension. I would start a file in computer for converted files. Then transfer the converted file to the USB.
Good luck!

Yes PES files work on my Bernina. I think I just have to settle down and take it step by step. I was thinking yesterday after I wrote my post that I do have a Viking Topaz 40 with the emboridery unit and that would be a good option for stitching out the Viking designs. Duh! I was very comfortable with using my old D1 (RIP) and there is so much to relearn!
